Updates with Lucasfilm quote
YouTube.com may be rife with copyright-infringing videos and clips, but the leading Web video outfit has also been considered one of the most cooperative when it comes to taking them down at the request of Hollywood studios.
Or putting them back up — in the case of Star Wars owners Lucasfilm.
Star Wars fans rejoice. Lucasfilm, which had requested YouTube remove an item it said was taken without permission from starwars.com, has now asked YouTube to restore Star Wars fan-made spoof and parody videos that were yanked.
Lucasfilm’s note to fans:
Lucasfilm has been informed that YouTube recently removed from its site several fan-made Star Wars spoofs and parodies. We would like the fan film community to know that this was not done at our request.Apparently the action was taken by YouTube as a result of a misunderstanding of a request to remove an item containing material taken from starwars.com without our permission. We have asked YouTube to restore any works that they inadvertently removed.
A YouTube representative was not immediately reachable.
Lucasfilm spokesman John Singh said “It should all be resolved by now…We are tremendously supportive of fan films.”
