Anne Frank tree falls over in heavy wind and rain

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) – A giant chestnut tree that comforted Dutch diarist Anne Frank as she hid from the Nazis in an Amsterdam attic during World War Two collapsed in heavy wind and rain on Monday.

No one was hurt and the 150-year old tree fell across a fence, missing the Anne Frank House, which has been turned into a museum and was full of tourists.

Crucell raises guidance, upbeat after Q2 profit

AMSTERDAM, Aug 17 (Reuters) – Dutch biotech group Crucell
(CRCL.AS: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) swung to a second-quarter net profit as it benefited
from production problems at one of its key rivals, and it raised
its full-year guidance on expected new orders for its vaccines.

Crucell was upbeat on prospects for its paediatric vaccine
Quinvaxem after rival Sanofi-Aventis’s (SASY.PA) Shantha
Biotechnics was forced to recall its vaccines and lost in July a
prequalification status to supply the World Health Organisation.

Nestle and CSM caution over higher input costs

ZURICH/AMSTERDAM, Aug 11 (Reuters) – Food groups Nestle
(NESN.VX: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and CSM (CSMNc.AS: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) warned of a tougher second half due
to rising costs but said price increases and forward buying will
mitigate the impact of higher wheat and other commodity prices.

Switzerland’s Nestle, the world’s largest food group,
cautioned on Wednesday of a more challenging input cost
environment during the second half, while Dutch group CSM says
it expects cost increases in a number of its raw materials.

CSM to raise prices in face of raw materials hike

AMSTERDAM, Aug 11 (Reuters) – Dutch food group CSM
(CSMNc.AS: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), facing higher raw material costs, said it would
raise its prices and cautiously forecast an increase in
second-half operating profit as its first-half earnings beat
estimates.

The world’s largest bakery supplies maker had earnings
before interest, tax and amortisation (EBITA) before exceptional
items of 102.5 million euros compared with the average estimate
of 96.5 million from a Reuters poll of seven analysts.

THE HAGUE (Reuters) – Actress Mia Farrow told a war crimes court on Monday that she had heard Naomi Campbell say she had been given a “huge diamond” by Charles Taylor, contradicting the British supermodel’s testimony last week.

Campbell told the Special Court for Sierra Leone she had been given “dirty looking pebbles” after a 1997 dinner in South Africa, but did not know if they were diamonds from the then Liberian president, on trial for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Campbell diamond testimony under the spotlight

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) – British supermodel Naomi Campbell’s testimony at the trial of former Liberian president Charles Taylor will be put to the test on Monday when her former agent is expected to contradict her over a gift of diamonds.

Carole White will appear at the Special Court for Sierra Leone in The Hague to testify over a late-night gift Campbell received in 1997 after both of them had attended a charity dinner hosted by South Africa’s then-President Nelson Mandela.
