Did Dalai Lama ban make sense?
Organisers have postponed a conference of Nobel peace laureates in South Africa after the government denied a visa to Tibet’s spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, who won the prize in 1989 – five years after South Africa’s Archbishop Desmond Tutu won his and four years before Nelson Mandela and F.W. de Klerk won theirs for their roles in ending the racist apartheid regime.
Although local media said the visa ban followed pressure from China, an increasingly important investor and trade partner, the government said it had not been influenced by Beijing and that the Dalai Lama’s presence was just not in South Africa’s best interest at the moment.
The conference, ahead of the 2010 World Cup, had been due to discuss how to use soccer to fight xenophobia and racism.
“We stand by our decision. Nothing is going to change. The Dalai Lama will not be invited to South Africa. We will not give him a visa between now and the World Cup,” said government spokesman Thabo Masebe.
Whatever the reasoning, it angered the Nobel laureates in a country which has prided itself as a model of democracy and human rights since the end of apartheid in 1994.
Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Mandla, one of the conference organisers said the rejection was tainting South Africa’s democratic credentials.
“The government needs to review its decision and come to the party,” said Mandela, set to become a parliamentarian with the ruling African National Congress after the election in April.
Allowing a visit by the Dalai Lama could certainly have made relations with Beijing more difficult. Ties between France and China were badly strained after French President Nicolas Sarkozy met him in December, when France held the European Union presidency.
But banning the Dalai Lama has also created a storm that South Africa was unlikely to have wanted either.
Was the ban the right thing to do?

Did Dalai Lama ban make seense? Abssolutely! Impotent.
One side dalai lama is pretending to use peachful way get back his rule over tibet as he repeatedly told his audience ,but one the other side he slinkingly encouraged tibetans to stage bloody roits in Lhasa last March and shot a PLA sentry to death in Chongqing city this March.
From the view of a chinese american, this is an issue of fundamental value difference. Chinese regard country’s sovernity as the number one priority, it trumps economy and western human rights value. It is a life or death thing for chinese. Whatever Dalai Lama says about the history of tibet, 1.2 billion chinese view tibet as an integral part of china, and that won’t change. As for Dalai Lama’s peace trip around the world, most chinese are very glad that chinese leadership sees through the essence of his actions which is really trying to install himself as the god of tibet. So called tibetan culture death is most laughable. In a nation of 56 ethnicity group, somehow they all try to kill the tibetan culture. The real question should be asked is why tibetans do not want to integrate with the rest of chinese in today’s more integrated world? Who are the true racists? Also, if the nobel peace committee can not tell the difference between peace lobbying and political lobbying, they really don’t have much standings in Chinese population.
Alvo Ofumane from MozambiqueI`m proud of the decision the organisers of the conference made. I never thouht in countries like china and South Africa political interests were more than improving relationship betwen cultures and promote peace in the world. I`m verry ashamed of South African government decision because in my point of view, the conference has nothing to do with confrotation betwen Dalai Lama and China government.what I assist in South Africa in these last days makes me say to my mind: ‘this is not the country of Mandela anymore’.how can the government contradicts rules of moral exemples in the world that people spent years in jail to convence the world that ‘it is possible people from every where and of every color to share the same place and live in peace’.Mr. Kgalema, I know u are not quite autonomous to take your own decision, but be courageous and show the world that South Africa is still the example of moral, the country of Mandela.!
The South African authorities have just given the answer that His presence is not in the best interest of the country, which means economical interests with china can not be jeopardized. Even a political blind would not think twice to tick to this political pressure as the cause. But I am saddened that a country or especially a party which received such support internationally during apartheid years is now shying away from its identity.
Chinese posters, nimen hao. You think the Dalai Lama lies, and you think sovereignty is very important… well, people in my country, South Africa, have died fighting for people’s right to listen to everyone and make up their own minds. People have died for freedom and independence and sovereignty. That is vitally important to US. Even if the Dalai Lama tells lies, he has the right to be heard, and the people of China have the right to make up their own minds. But can they listen to him now? CAN WE? Because of your economic pressure, China has become the caricature that America used to be. How can anyone tell the difference between “peace lobbying” and “political lobbying” if they can’t even hear what he says? While China bans the Dalai Lama, and even discussion about him, they loose. They will always loose.
“We stand by our decision. Nothing is going to change. The Dalai Lama will not be invited to South Africa. We will not give him a visa between now and the World Cup,” said government spokesman Thabo Masebe.Well, the only thing that seems to change is that, South Africa becomes the first neutral nation to deny visa to His Holiness the Dalai Lama for reasons known only to them as dictated by the chinese govt.
As His Holiness the Dalai Lama rightly told the world, the Tibetan people have been living in “hell on Earth” for the past 50 years, brutally treated by the Chinese. Here are some examples to prove it. Comparing between the 1950′s and the 2000′s –Tibetan population: 1.2M to 2.8MTibetan Life Expectancy: from 35.5 to 67Tibetan Literacy Rate: from virtually zero to +50%Infant mortality in TAR: from 43% to 3.7%The Chinese government sinisterly exempted the Tibetans from the one-child policy. Thus the Tibetan parents are tricked into having more children, speeding their way towards the ethnic extinction.Every year, millions of dollars are spent in Tibet to build schools, hospitals, electricity generators, new houses etc. by the Chinese government, just to make sure the living conditions of this hell on earth is continuously deteriorating. And they don’t even allow Tibetans to pay income tax. How despicable is this!!!
Wow the Chinese gov’t sure got it’s agents on this quick. At least I hope they are gov’t tools and not real people who are that dumb. China says jump and African nations don’t even ask how high they just get to jumping as quick and and high as they can. Just look at South Africa prostitute itself, shame itself and disgrace itself all for some Chinese business. Thankfully this world economic crisis will finish off any threat of China reaching a true world power status. They’ll be so busy cracking down on their own population to worry much about world affairs.
It is lamentable that the South African government did not issue a visa for the Dalai Lama’s visit. How quickly the struggle for freedom of expression, the right of all to vote, and freedom from fear of an authoritarian gov’t is forgotten. Tibet today is not all that different from the former “bantustans” of the old SA regime–marginalized inhabitants without true political rights ruled over by puppet leaders appointed by the central government. Tibetans never asked to be a part of China, their nation, however imperfect, was invaded by foreigners (Han) in 1950, subdued, and forced to sign a meaningless treaty under duress. It is the democratic right of the Tibetan people to choose their own destiny, as has been realized for all South Africans today. China’s “life or death” idea of the unity of the”great motherland” has no bearing on the right of Tibetans to reclaim their lost soveriegnty. After all, Tibet has been a nation for far longer than all but a handful of UN member states. South Africans should suppport Tibetans just struggle, as the South African struggle for freedom was supported by people around the world.
Yes,it makes a lot of sense. Our freedom fighter,Winnie Mandela was denied Canadian visa.USA,Canada,UK and Australia have denied many people access to their countries with much more flimsier excuses than this.It is our country, and our leaders have the right to deny anybody whose presence in the country will offend our allies. The NOBLE peace award is a western concocted award to reward those who promote their interests. If the Dalai Lama is a man of peace,he must openly demonstrate it to us instead of saying one thing behind close doors and come out to tell us entirely different things.People of peace and spirituality must be able to design a mechanism to deal with conditions more severe than what we see in Tibet.
I love it when people think all chinese people are somehow brainwashed by the government. They think chinese do not know the difference between right from wrong. They think they are banned to speak or to think. The truth is they talked about it and thought about it. The conclusion they reached does not warrant for any further discussions. There is no need to promote separatist movement within a country, any country. It is hypocritical to accuse chinese government when most countries will squash the separatist movement in the exact same way, think Britain, Canada…. So who is really brainwashed?
It is shame on south african democracy and it indecates that S. africa surrenders her dignity and democratic value to communist tyrannical government state like china. free world will see.

I don’t think the issue is whether the south african government was right or wrong in banning the dalai lama from entering the country, afterall, he had been allowed into the same country twice.now, south africa has the right to protect the peace, and be diplomatic about it. the dalai lama’s visits have often sparked protests from around the world.even when it is that he comes in peace. However,we must not rule out the fact that china is wary of any visit, peaceful or not of the dalai lama.i believe south africa is only being doiplomatic about the fact that it wants to continue to maintain cordial relations with china, and as well, protect itself from being seen as a supporter of the dalai lama, and his cause.its all a diploamtic case.
Well I submit it’s quite clear who is brainwashed, a nation of over a billion who are ruled by a small cadre of thugs. If the Chinese weren’t brainwashed they would have long ago rose up and gotten rid of that totalitarian gang that runs the nation. Only by fear and brain washing can an archaic remnant of the last century continue to run the way it does. I mean the Chinese gov’t is terrified of the internet and letting the average person see how backward and repressed they are. Maybe you like being repressed, or more likely if you are actually in the US, you are a privileged child of the party and thus will support that corrupt regime so you can continue to enjoy the fruits of others labors. Before freeing Tibet, just free China, but then again you’d probably lose out on a lot of ill gotten benefits if that actually happened. Anyways, it’s impressive that a repressive, backward and corrupt collection of cronies and goons has it’s defenders. Then again what can you expect when some people are part of that goonery and the rest are afraid to speak up from fear of being killed.
Shame on South Africa. After decades of support from the rest of the world (myself included), they fail to do return the favor for another group of people being subjugated by a repressive govt. C’mon folks – we all know what the Chinese government does to dissenters. Do you really believe that the Chinese government is “integrating” these people without torture? Tibet was occupied by China…Please read up on the Chinese “Cultural revolution” for a great historical account of what the Chinese government does to people to break their will and enforce compliance. Buddhism is a religion of peace, but these days it seems violence, not peace is heard and aided (Pakistan).
Who i s frank Castle? People with names just like his have denied the rights of thousands upon thousands of nations in North and South America, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, Asia and stole their countries. But do they ever remember? How about you Frank Castle?
Global opinion on the Tibet issue is always clouded by stale old assumptions about the term ‘China’. China is not a country, in exactly the same way as the Soviet Union wasn’t a country – frankly, it’s ridiculous to believe that 56 ethnic groups should just happen to all agree that they are all one country. China is actually a whole bunch of countries that are held together mostly by force but also, partly, by a common written language (in the same way that written Latin brought a common literary heritage to ‘Christendom’ in ancient times). When single-party Communist rule collapses, China will fragment into separate countries, just as the Soviet Union did. The only real question is: how many?
Tibet has been a part of China, and it will always be!! That is the bottom line for Chinese. What is Dalai Lama? Is he a religeous guy? He is a more politician than religeous one. All the bloody things happened in Tibet were related to him.
Well, I believe that the Western countries will be extremely happy if there’re more Dalais of each of the 56 ethnic groups of China and they advocate for “democracy” of their own, for that may make China pieces of small countries and no longer a giant. But, if it comes true one day, who will care about their democracy any more?China has a histroy of integration of ethnics during the past thousands years, while westerns were counquering each others and splitting to isolated nations. There’s no wonder that some of western countries would rather listen to the advocate of an old lier than respect the willings of a huge amount of Chinese people.
People like this Frank Castle is probably an imperialist who only wish to exploit other nations.Look into the past and we could recognize the colonist suppression, exploitation and killing of local tribal people for their land and resources. In this 21st century, these people are still clinging onto to this type of mentality, without shame.Supporting a policy to split other country has become the champion to a human right issue?
I am really surprised by most of these reactions… Until now I had a great respect for South Africa who showed the word that freedom is not just a dream.Today, the dream is obviously over. Sad…As Rose say so well, you fail to do return the favor for another group of people being subjugated by a repressive govt. So the door is now closed in SA.Well, what is there left to say? Diplomacy? Gosh…
Bravo SA, Bravo! Forget the Da-lie Lama.DL stands for serfdom, slavery, oppression, …DL is a sly politician in monk’s clothing. To associate DL with peace is an insult to peace.Forget him.
The problem with some people is they think they know how the world works. What is black and what is white. Those people normally think they are morally superior than others so that they can point their fingers at others. The funny thing is they are so desperately trying to persuade Chinese that they are living in hell when most Chinese are enjoy more freedom than ever. It must be shocking for those idealists to hear. Truth is hard to swallow sometimes. But don’t be surprised when you find out most of Chinese do not stand by your side when you preach human rights and dehumanize the chinese government.
Since when does anybody in the world have the right to prescribe to South Africa what their goverment should or should not do.As I see it we are a souvereign country and really do not need to justify anything to anybody. Mandela’s grandson also makes comments on his behalf without prior consultation. Our Madiba is the only true Nobel price winner of the lot. The rest seems to be like fox terriers chasing the bus but when it stops they run like hell for home. Mandla’s is an oppertunist that uses Madiba’s good name to enter into politics and should rather get himself a proper job or adress the poverty in our neighbouring country of Zimbabwe. That is if he want to do something else than critisize. To be frank South Africa needs partnership with China and should refrain from dealing from anybody in Tibet who , to say the least have most probably worst internal problems than that of Zimbabwe.
The funny thing is they are so desperately trying to persuade Chinese that they are living in hell when most Chinese are enjoy more freedom than ever.Isn’t that all relative, judging more freedom is laughable, when you come from absolutely no freedom, anything is an improvement. Again you probably are part of the machinery enslaving most of your fellows so of course you think things are fine. Of course most Chinese won’t stand up for freedom and human rights, if there were goons who would drag me away and shoot me if I stood up for freedom I would think twice about it too. Fortunately I live I a modern nation unlike most Chinese who still live like it was the 19th century. I mean why else do western nations export their production there, because they get cheap labor and no complaints about work conditions or wages. You have to love the way the Chinese have “modernized”, the bad parts of communism for the masses and the good parts of capitalism for a select few.Anyways, we’ll see how great things are going in China once it descends into chaos once it’s false growth spurt ends as the economy stumbles. They can try to hide the fact there are riots and work place problems but the truth gets out.
It is not acceptable for politicians to use the coming soccer world cup as a means to achieve their political agenda. Let the Nobel price winners stay away from our beautiful game please. Why mix our soccer with world politics.
1994 feels like so long ago. As the years pass, the divide between rich and poor, the caring and those who couldn’t care less becomes all the more apparent. China is systematically helping to destroy Africa’s economy with their sweatshop trinkets, and as the new colonial force in Africa fund dictators (example: Zimbabwe) to make a right mess of everything, just so they can make their move. As a South African, the ban of the Dalai Lama has been a great blow to my morale, because no matter in which light you view the man, if he’s not respected in our supposed “democracy”, then nobody of his like or kind is, and that’s an exclusion I can’t overlook. South African silence about the chaos in Zimbabwe, China’s upkeep of Mugabe, Chinese being declared “black” and now the revelation of China’s true power in our government (I smell CORRUPTION) sketch some uneasy pointers to what the future might hold….
Quote” 1:27 pm GMT It is not acceptable for politicians to use the coming soccer world cup as a means to achieve their political agenda. This has nothing to do with the world cup, but is a conference preceeding the world cup and was organized by some of the Nobel Prize winners or their relatives. A course in understanding the written word is in order.
“Tibet has been a part of China, and it will always be!! That is the bottom line for Chinese.”Not true. Tibet has a separate culture, language, and people. It was once a PROTECTORATE of China at Tibet’s request. A lesson in history is in order here.
If the SA govt & Chinese Govt are scared of a relatively little fellow like Dalai Lama then they must be babies. Big babies who run around in the clothes of men. 1988 Tiannanman square is not forgotten. Chinese who buy into the Chinese gov’ts propaganda regarding Tibet are robots. The Chinese Communist party runs China and the rest of the Chinese population are slave to the party. They have no say and if they don’t like it they get to live in a Chinese Gulag – a good supply of organ donors for the Chinese Communist Party. China has more people watching what websites (including this) than insuring the safety of their food supply. To Chinese who don’t like the Dalia Lama – shut up and drink your melamine tainted milk! You idiot robotic slaves! Long live Tibet – China lives in the dark past.
Isn’t it funny to see Africans welcome a slave owner?
Seriously, the reason why some Western Countries have a flawed foreign policy is because of you have a mass population where the media control people, “We are good. They are bad.” People like stupid and simple things. There’s a war over your brain. To clarify a few things, although the CCP have their own socialist rhetorical on this issue, the Free Tibet organizations are neither moral or ethical. For one I will never ever support autonomy for Tibet for the reasons of their racist agenda. Splitting 25% of a country for the reasons of race, culture, ethnicity is a sign of intolerance and immaturity. Secondly, I do not wish for a backward oppressive theocracy who ruled Tibet who practiced disembowelment to gain power ever again. Absolute power corrupts as it effected Chiang Kai Shek and Mao ZheDong. The Dalai Lama, God King with divine rights with a cult following, former senior party member of the Chinese National People’s Congress, is no exception to this. Learn and research. Look for the truth. There are valid reasons why CCP disposes religious leaders.
It is sad to see Communism’s lust for greed and power yet AGAIN and AGAIN over another ancient and beautiful land such as South Africa…Time will reveal China’s communist philosophy and it’s unceasing desire to eat everything in it’s path to have domination and control of others.
South Africa has shown to the world that they are still not liberated from colonialism. Pity that China will have to dictate to SA. Pity.
Sad to see SA behave just like the population of China itself, be afraid of the party leadership and do what they say without question. SA obviously knew hoe weak and pathetic this would make them appear on the world stage and yet they did it anyways. I hope those in power in SA got a lot of favors for it. Then again world opinion won’t affect their bank account balances and people will forget in a short time and they will still have all that Chinese money. No wonder Africa is so backwards, with leadership like that what can you expect.
How very sad that the present South African government has forgotten the difficult journey the country had to travel to get to where it is today. I have no doubt that those involved in making the decision to refuse His Holiness a visa, were very much a part of the struggle and did everything in their power to fight the oppressive apartheid regime. His Holiness has done no less – opposing the occupation of Tibet and oppression of its people by the Chinese regime. And by the way, no less than what Jesus did for his people.Truth is power and the fact that FW de Klerk and Archbishop Tutu refused to attend the Conference which subsequently has been cancelled, speaks volumes about the respect, love and admiration that many have for His Holiness the Dalai Lama.Long live His Holiness and the people of Tibet. Peace and freedom will be yours!
I am confused! Can some one please tell me how the reincarnation of this parasitic monk got the Nobel Peace prize? What is the criteria to get nominated? Did he come up with a theory that proved there is such thing as reincarnation like the physicists do with their work to earn the Nobel prize in physics? It seems to me that all this fashionable parasite dressed in monk robe has to do is to bad mouth China once in a while to earn enough money for his Rolex, mumble and jumble a little bit about reincarnation. Isn’t it a joke that such a parasitic monk got the Nobel peace prize since all he has done is incite hatreds between different enthnicities in China.
So sad the position of SA.This is the latest example of the importance of do not forget the PAST. Like Slavery, Holocaust,Communism, and other violence .It is so important to always remind the world and new generations the atrocities from the past to learn and never forget the Human Suffering. To teach to do not be cowards and have the courage to preserve Freedom and Dialogue. No! to subjugate your values.Sow sorry to see this happening again and all the world witnness of this acts of discrimination and seudo justification of foreign policy.
It is ironic that the Dalai Lama who has been tring to engage the Chinese is a peaceful solution to their conflict with the culture in Tibet – should have been denied entry -It only shows that the Chinese are seriously afraid of him.they are not so very clever that way – but they seems to take the view that isolating people outside their system will make them go away -Clearly the Chinese are indifferent to the suffering of the Tibet people – and with their demand for conformity want all people in the Chinese empire to be alikeConstance Blackwell
western writers/reporters all have mental blocks re Dalai. They have chosen to overlook some history facts. They have made him the “perfect” person instead of a religious ploitician. I hope they shed their colored glasses and be more objective.
Why are the journalists so lazy or afraid to just go to some real historians or go to the library to check Tibet’s history and tell the public the truth? Here is the link from Harvard University website with all the old maps made by British. http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~chgis/data/c hgis/downloads/v3/datasets/index.html#ci tas I don’t want to judge who is honest and who is lying to the world. I hope all the people with a functioning brain can tell the fact. This is not an insult to the journalists, but all the medias have different wealthy sponsors which already sign them into a specific tone on politics, so there is no fair and freedom speech here in the whole world, well maybe only in your dreams.
a) What DL wants is not striving for Tibetans to reclaim their lost sovereignty, it’s for His Holiness to reclaim his lost serfdom. This is not a man suffered in hell for 50 years. He could’ve choosen to stay & fight for “his” people in the peaceful way, instead of moving all his treasures to India.b) it’s idiotic to do Chinese-bashing, and to insult 1.2 billion people. Bigotry in the name of human rights is, hypocrisy.c) when countries do things to please the US gov’t, it’s good; when they tried to please other gov’t, then it’s bad. hello?!d) not all the Chinese officials are “cronies and goons”, there’re many bad ones but few good ones, like any other government on earth. nothing’s odd about it.e) what is more important for Tibetans (or any human beings of any race): food on the table, education for kids, means to make a living – be self-subsistent, gov’t assistant when mother nature strikes & kill your whole herd of yaks…. OR?? slavery from the dark ages.f) wonder if Mr. frank castle own anything that is “made in China”, wonder how much principle is there: standing against cheap-enslaved-brainwashed-exploded-robo tic-dumb-mute workers Vs going for cheap prices.
I own lots of products made by the brain washed slaves in China. If people won’t stand up for themselves, and will in fact defend their overlords they deserve exactly what they get. If they enjoy being under the thumb of a corrupt regime and won’t fight for their own rights then let them suffer. If you want to be a stooge then go ahead.I think it’s hilarious all this talk about how bad and evil the DL is, who cares, let him come and talk and then people will see if that is true. I, unlike the Chinese gov’t and apparently some of it’s people aren’t afraid to let people talk and make up my own mind.
Lets see the Dalai Lama was what, 17 when the Chinese invaded Tibet. Knowing the progressive nature of the Dalai Lama I think we would see a much different country today then when he was 17. There is no doubt it would be better than it is under the repressive Chinese regime which is one of the most brutal dictatorships in the world. Is that they price they are to pay for food on their table? Torture and murder at the hands of their oppressors. The Dalai Lama wants peace and compassion and the opportunity for his countrymen to have freedoms like exist in the US. I know its not perfectin the US(what is) but Chinas rule over Tibet is an insult to humanity.
South Africa is again showing how short sighted and irresponsible it is. Cosying up to repugnat regimes and abandoning principle shows they probably don’t have what it takes to represent Africa on the security council or represent the down troden. Keep at it and the chickens will come home to roost sooner or later.
whether or not the ban makes sense depends upon the paradigm in use; if one of open discussions with all cards on the table face-up, no; if the agenda is media- and academic-elite-driven, then why not, as predictable outcomes are farces anyway? no transparency, no peace
I think it is good one way since it gives more attention to Tibet issue and the ban rather helps convey the message–only more forcefully.GO DL!
South Africa supports Mugabe because it is in SA best interest????, bans the DL because it isn’t in their best interest ???? .Most of the world should boycott the world cup in SA because it is in many countries best interest.
Those who have been brain washed have been shouting aloud and pointing at their opposition and critisizing. The last thing Africa needs is braind washed by the western media. Empty democracy or freedom, human rights, have they ever stopped to expoit Africa? China doesn’t buy those shit from the west and what has happended to them? And what happened to DL? He is still staying there where he was and flattering the west. He so cowerd, missed one after other chance back to China, afraid he will be killed. He wouldn’t never die for his people. Do the world really believe that Chinese government will kill him? Don’t make me laugh!!!

Calling ANY human being a coward for a fear of death, is simply disgusting. It takes courage to face such adversity and fight for your people and culture that is being opressed, against insurmountable odds. Charly, I hope you can find your emotions and stray away from your Machiavellian attitude.
