It seems where ever these islamic idiots turn up, they make a catastrophic mess of things. Blinkered mentality, blind adherence to a fairy story, an overwhelming fear of women, brainwashing kids to be suicide bombers, beheading anyone who questions their stupidity....why the hell does anyone follow these half-wits?

yes vitruvianman - africans were taken as slaves to "christian" countries but it was their own tribal leaders AND the muslim warlords of the day that ran them to the coast for sale; and even TODAY the same 'religion of peace' people do this to the black africans! YouTube the subject of modern day slavery in Africa there are several reputable sources on there from mainstream research and media and africans themselves talking about it! And you truly need to study history and look further back in it concerning africa and slavery and its roots in the islamic invasions of north africa in 600/700 A.D.

If you would study islam and slavery in general, and if you can stand to study the truth of it, look up the Barbary Wars while your at it! Ironic isn't it when one reads up on THAT subject, that here we all are in the world today STILL fighting against piracy by Somali muslims?? sick -

The writer of this article sadly has it wrong when he says "Islam in Africa has traditionally co-existed comfortably with other religions", and the above poster blithly states that islam has nothing to do with it is also sadly mistaken... ask any South Sudanese Christian if islam has anything to do with 'it'- why such a long horrible war there and now a DIVISION of the country into a muslim north and a christian south? Then ask any other educated black african of ANY OTHER RELIGION or even of NO RELIGION that is NOT a muslim if they think Islam has been good for Africa and the African people in general.

One of the saddest events in islamic history that certainly wasn't good for some other people, was when the Persian people of Iran entrusted their GLORIOUS country's well being to a religious fanatic of a man who wrote "guidelines" on the proper way to treat an animal after a person has had sex with it! (no joke people!!google 'sex with animals islam') THIS was the 'father' of the islamic revoution of Iran! Sad!! Interesting to note that an underground poll was taken by some young Iranians and when asked if they would support the revolution today knowing what they know NOW about what it has brought to them as a people and a nation - they said NO in OVERWHELMING NUMBERS!! SO - if the Iranian people could change their world - they WOULD! Which is a VERY SOBERING thought to ALL PEOPLE OF THE ARAB SPRING!!ALL EGYPTIANS AND TUNISIANS AND LIBYANS that want PROGRESS and ECONOMIC STABILITY should take a hard look at IRAN and take notes! They could easily become the next Iran or Pakistan - ruled not by just ONE tyrant - but by MANY tyrants in religious robes and mired down by RAMPANT corruption in its infrastructures and politics!! The only success story in ALL islamic countries is Turkey and its only because all citizens are protected by a separation of mosque and state - and today even THAT is being challenged there...

If this 'religion' is going to survive as the world progresses, it indeed as the comment above stated, needs to have its own religious 'reformation' just as the Jewish and Christian religions have. But I don't think they can accomplish this because to do so will force it to admit it needs change and that its religious "laws" and human rights issues needs to come OUT of the past of 1,400 years ago and that the doctrines of hadith and sunnah of enslaving people, and spousal abuse, and FGM, and the mantras from islamic clerics that say murdering unbelievers or atheists or people that are homosexual is justified and right - is just WRONG. Hate speech is just hate speech - whether its from an islamic cleric, a christian preacher, Luis Farakhan, or the grand dragon of the KKK!!

All I know for sure after studying the history of this fascist type political religion with its dogmas of politics and war and sharia human rights abuses and oppressions even in TODAYS TIMES - is that wherever the so called "religion of peace" rules people in its sharia law governments, or is in mass populations among other mixed minority denominations -

then there is no peace...

Really? Who is surprised by this madness?? In political Islam, there is NO valid law other than the Islamic law, Sharia. The constitutions of liberal democracies are nothing more than the folly of fallible men and not worth the paper and ink wasted on them. ISLAM is a WAR on the cornerstones of democratic principles: individual rights and freedoms. ISLAM is a declared WAR on the very existence of democracy and the freedom of mind in the world.

In ISLAM, there is absolutely NO room for political pluralism. None!

Religion needs to be abolished. Extremists abuse it too much.

This is why you can't have nice things.

I mean really, we ban drugs for similar reasons. Why not this drug? It changes peoples perspective and make them unable to reason for their beliefs. It's a major problem.

I have nothing against small practice religion, but when you waste money on churches and try to enforce it (jehovas witnesses included here) or push it onto others you've gone too far.

Islam have got litle to do with Africa's setback. It's pathetic we still lay shoulders on religion for the menace of Africa.A century ago we were not pegans but religion brought no misery. Many are missing the point.Westerners are seeking for Africa's total dependent on them. Many African states gained independent not by their choice because it went the hard way. They are the manufacturers of all we use to distabalise the continent, that they are using to support their fragile economies. How would boko haram or al shabaab have waged war on Nigeria or Somalia without having arm ties with some western allies? westerns powers invaded Iraq and Afghanistan not for safeguarding you but because the countriies were not dependent on them and their economies were booming so they alleged them of pessessing weapons of mass distruction and so on which proved to be nightmares. There are some positive sides of the west though but can you tell a happy man by just a smile? Let us cross examine ours ties with the west and stop the ugly part of it.

At poster, you really didn't get it. The northern nigeria constitute the majority and thus more percentage of the national cake goes to their region. Their problem remains the same where a man marries many wives like 5 upward and having like 25 children leaving the upkeep of their children to themselves. The children fend for themselve by begging for food and thereby constituting a menace with increased population with increasing poverty. Their (boko haram) point is to islamise Nigeria, and not because of any marginalization resulting from their long record of superiority feelings. It also happens in the Jos (a state in Nigeria) where the the hausas entered the predominantly christian state and is now fighting their way to claim ownership of the state....pathetic!!!

imperialrober, "...who enslaved the africans..."

...No doubt Europeans have a lot to answer for... but Arab slavers had the biggest part in taking (or assisting tribes in taking) slaves from their villages and marching them to the coast... leaving a long trail of bones bleaching in the sun...

@imperialrober, who enslaved the africans and took them to new england and europe to serve the white man?? was it muslims or christians?.

Trying to demonise islam and blame it for the problems the african continent is facing is really pathetic. you judge over billion muslims by few extreme sects?? i do not think muslims had anything to do with WW1 or WW2, Iraq was destroyed by christians (and thier allies).

What about american evangelical priests in places like Uganda and other african countries spreadin anti-gay hate, lots of gays were killed and tortured because of their teachings.

Arabs and muslims lived in peace side by side with africans for centuries, colonisation is what brought the continent to its knees not islam.

Hi Mathew, you didn't get it right when you described the muslims in northern Nigeria as poor and marginalised. These people chose their ways of life and have refused to embrace anything that could change these ancient cultures. Their animal breeding activities have had negative impact on the ecology of that region. Thousands of nomads and their cow herds can be seen moving from one state to another in search of green grass. While most countries no longer practice such ancient, wasteful and destructive method of animal production, inhabitants of this region, mostly the fulanis, have refused to establish ranches and have instead acquired arms to forcefully occupy new lands for grazing. But these are people that were favoured by the British colonial authorities who forced other ethnic tribes in the region to become subjects under the Othman Dan Fodio caliphate system through the indirect rule system. What stopped them from making use of their superior position within the British arrangement to educate themselves? Instead, they started humiliating and marginalising those ethnic groups who had defeated them during the Jihad of the Dan Fodio era. Their primary concern still remains the Islamisation of the entire Nigeria, that is why any group that comes up with even muderous agenda in the name of Islamisation receives huge support from the muslim population in northern Nigeria. The so-called elites in the region are the brain behind this plan as vindicated by the arrest of a serving Nigerian senator in connection with the boko haram attacks.
