This approach has been described as Keynesian Thatcherism by some enlightened conservative politicians, such as Sweden’s finance minister Anders Borg. Now, Osborne has secretly become a zealous convert.”

Thank God he has woken up to the fact that without growth the problem of debt cannot be resolved and that to achieve higher growth there must be more debt.

In this context, the ostensible independence of the Bank of England and the creation of the “Office of Budget Responsibility” are a sham, a mere cynical political gambit. I wish I could see, in any aspect of George Osborne’s performance, solid evidence that he has consistent principles and a moral backbone. But so far, I’ve been unable to find good evidence of that. Still waiting…
