Where Messi leads, Argentina must follow

PORTO ALEGRE Brazil (Reuters) – After underwhelming early performances, traditional Latin American top dogs Argentina and reigning African champions Nigeria have something to prove when they meet in their final World Cup Group F match on Wednesday.

Argentina were among the favourites going in to the tournament but despite a much-vaunted front four, they have yet to come alive, with the exception of some moments of match-winning magic from Lionel Messi.

In World Cup, Portunol is the loving tongue

PORTO ALEGRE Brazil (Reuters) – With the World Cup bringing thousands of fans from nine Spanish-speaking countries to Brazil, whose language is Portuguese, the mongrel language known as Portunol is helping to ease communications.

The informal, spontaneous hybrid of the two Iberian languages is commonly used in southern Brazil, which has strong links with neighboring Argentina and Uruguay, and by Spaniards and Latin Americans visiting other parts of the former Portuguese colony.

Close call for Netherlands against brave Australia

PORTO ALEGRE Brazil (Reuters) – A long-range strike by substitute Memphis Depay gave the Netherlands a 3-2 win over Australia in a thrilling World Cup Group B game but a brave, hard-charging Socceroos side had threatened to earn a famous victory.

The game was marked by end-to-end action and spectacular goals – notably a stunning volley by Australia’s Tim Cahill which canceled out a goal by the Netherlands’ Arjen Robben only a minute earlier.
