Euro zone data keeps euro away from lows, yen underperforms

LONDON (Reuters) – Robust expansion in Germany and the euro zone’s private sector helped the euro recover from recent lows on Thursday, although growing expectations that the ECB will ease monetary policy next week kept gains muted.

Earlier, better-than-expected Chinese data saw the safe-haven yen lose ground and helped the Australian dollar recover some of this week’s losses. AUD=D4

Axis-Shield bows to Alere’s modestly raised bid

Oct 6 (Reuters) – Medical diagnostics firm Axis-Shield
said it agreed to be bought by larger peer Alere Inc
, after the U.S. company modestly sweetened its offer to
235 million pounds, ending a three-month battle for the maker of
Afinion devices.

Axis-Shield’s shares, which have gained about 34 percent in
value since Alere first pitched the offer to the board in July,
were up 4 percent at 468 pence at 0757 GMT on Thursday on the
London Stock Exchange.

St Ives’ shift towards marketing helps annual results

Oct 4 (Reuters) – British printer St Ives Plc posted
strong results for the year helped by its shift towards the
higher-margin marketing services unit, and said it will look at
more acquisitions in the business.

St Ives, which prints 160 million books each year from Bible
to bestsellers like Harry Potter, also raised its total dividend
for the year by 50 percent to 5.25 pence, after declaring a
final dividend of 3.5 pence.

Alere ups Axis-Shield stake, rival sidelined

(Reuters) – U.S. medical diagnostics firm Alere Inc (ALR.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) said it raised its stake in smaller UK peer Axis-Shield (ASD.L: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) to 29.9 percent, the most it can buy in the open market, pushing a potential rival bidder to the sidelines.

Alere is attempting a hostile takeover after Axis-Shield rejected its 230 million pound bid in July.

Premier Oil sees delay in meeting 2012 avg output target

BANGALORE, Aug 25 (Reuters) – Premier Oil Plc
expects a delay in meeting its daily average production target
for 2012 due to financial difficulties faced by its partner in
the Huntington project in the North Sea.

Shares of Premier Oil fell as much as 9 percent to a more
than two-week low of 318.9 pence on the London Stock Exchange,
making it the top loser on the FTSE mid-cap index on
Thursday.

Axis-Shield stands firm on Alere rejection

BANGALORE/LONDON, Aug 24 (Reuters) – Axis-Shield ,
the British medical diagnostics firm fighting a takeover by U.S.
rival Alere Inc , is open to considering an offer that
values the company “more appropriately,” its chief executive
told Reuters.

“Any other bids that come in from Alere or anyone else,
we’ll give them proper consideration for our advisors and if we
think the level is more appropriate then we’ll take the right
action,” CEO Ian Gilham said.

Melrose cuts FY production outlook; eyeing asset buys

BANGALORE, Aug 17 (Reuters) – Melrose Resources cut
its full-year production forecast for the second time in four
months, as the oil and gas explorer was hit by mechanical
problems and disappointing well results at some of its fields in
Egypt.

Melrose found water at some of its fields in Egypt and was
drilling replacement wells to offset the loss in production,
Chief Executive David Thomas told Reuters.

Axis-Shield says Alere’s bid undervalues company

BANGALORE (Reuters) – British medical diagnostics firm Axis-Shield said a 230-million-pound offer approach from larger U.S. rival Alere Inc “fundamentally undervalued” the company and its future prospects.

Alere said it made a 460-pence per share offer for Axis-Shield, a month after the British firm rebuffed its indicative approach pitched at the same price.
