Banks have won a two-year Supreme Court battle which deals a major blow to hundreds of thousands of customers seeking to claim back billions of pounds of what they say are unfair overdraft charges.

Banks have won a two-year court battle, dealing a major blow to hundreds of thousands of customers seeking to claim back billions of pounds of what they say are unfair overdraft charges.

The new Supreme Court found that the Office of Fair Trading cannot use customer protection rules to investigate whether the fees were levied unfairly.

The landmark ruling in favour of seven banks and one building society overturns two previous rulings that said the OFT had the power to investigate the unauthorised overdraft fees because the charges fell under the scope of consumer contract law.

The Supreme Court, however, said the charges form part of the fees for current account services and could not be assessed for fairness under the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations.

Consumers now face the choice of giving up their claims or taking on the might of the banks through individual claims, which could prove costly. To read more on how the decision affects you, read this guide from moneysavingexpert.com

What do you think of the ruling? Have the banks behaved unfairly and therefore have been made to pay the money back, or is it right that consumers should pay the price for breaking the terms and conditions of their current account?

Attendees will also be discussing whether the power of Twitter can be harnessed to improve the news and help re-engage a jaded electorate with the political process.

You can read more details about the conference and who is attending on our original blog post.
A group of former military leaders has accused the BNP, which has used photographs of spitfire fighter planes and Winston Churchill, of hijacking Britain's history for their own "dubious ends."

This is a busy week for the British National Party (BNP).

Today it was warned to stop using military imagery in its campaign material. A group of former military leaders accused the BNP, which has used photographs of spitfire fighter planes and Winston Churchill, of hijacking Britain's history for their own "dubious ends."

The distinguished generals said this tarnished the reputation of the armed forces and called on them to "cease and desist."

Meanwhile, the BNP's membership list has been leaked again. The names and addresses of thousands of members was posted on Wikileaks, a website that allows information to be published anonymously. BNP leader Nick Griffin said the list was a "malicious forgery."

Most controversially of all, Griffin is scheduled to appear on BBC's Question Time this Thursday evening. The decision to give the BNP a seat on the panel has angered some people, who feel they should not be given a platform to air their extreme views on issues such as immigration.

However, despite calls from Welsh Secretary Peter Hain to have Griffin dropped on the grounds that the party “is not lawfully constituted”, Director General Mark Thompson defended the BBC position of due impartiality. He said: "If there were to be any election –- local or national –- tomorrow, the BNP would still be able to field candidates.”

Do you think the BNP should be stopped from using military imagery to promote its policies? Is there a danger the armed forces will be tainted by this association with the far-right? Do you agree with the BBC's decision to invite Nick Griffin to appear on Question Time?

Question Time will be broadcast on BBC1 at 10.35pm this Thursday and we will be live blogging throughout the programme.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said Obama had been awarded the prize for his calls to reduce the world's stockpiles of nuclear weapons and work towards restarting the stalled Middle East peace process.

The committee praised Obama for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

"Very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future."

The laureate wins a gold medal, a diploma and 10 million Swedish crowns (1.4 million dollars or 878,000 pounds).

Obama was one of a record 205 nominees for this year's prize and the decision has come as a surprise to many. Zimbabwe's Prime Minister, Morgan Tsvangirai, had been tipped as one of the favourites.

Despite his ambitious international agenda, Obama is yet to make a significant breakthrough in the Middle East or effectively deal with the threat of Iran's nuclear programme and his country is currently fighting wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Cameron told delegates there would be "painful" cuts in public spending, promised to send more troops to Afghanistan and stressed the importance of confronting "Labour's debt crisis." He also pledged to modernise the pension system, "break the cycle of welfare dependency" and cut back on bureaucracy to make life easier for entrepreneurs.

Cameron's speech brings conference season to an end. Leaders of the three main parties -- Cameron, Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Nick Clegg for the Liberal Democrats -- have all laid out their plans for Britain ahead of a general election due by June 2010.

The 'word clouds' below have been generated using the complete texts from each of the leaders' keynote conference speeches, in the order they were given. At first glance there are some striking similarities and fascinating overlaps -- but we will leave it to you to draw your own conclusions.

Gordon Brown's speech to the annual Labour Party conference in Brighton focussed on families, health, crime and middle or mainstream issues.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has promised to clean up politics, get tough on crime in his keynote speech to the annual Labour Party conference in Brighton. He also pledged to address the bonus culture that many blame for the financial crisis.

The 'Word Cloud' below (click the image for a larger view), produced by Wordle, shows the words he used most frequently.

The speech was an attempt to rouse his beleaguered party and win back the middle-class voters who flocked to Labour under Tony Blair. The latest opinion poll from Ipsos Mori put Labour down in third place for the first time since 1982.

Reuters Chief Correspondent Keith Weir, who is live blogging the Labour conference, said the key themes that struck him were Brown's focus on families, health, crime and middle or mainstream issues.

What did you think of Gordon Brown's speech? Have your views on him changed? Do you think he can still win a general election next year?
