If he makes the wrong call, it will go down as one of the worst political decisions in British history and make Gordon Brown’s tenure of No. 10 Downing Street one of the shortest ever.
But the possibility of a snap election this Autumn is dominating the Labour conference in the same way as Sir Ming Campbell’s age did that of the Liberal Democrats last week.
The polls say Labour would beat the Conservatives if an election were to be held now, even despite the Northern Rock bank queues and foot and mouth.
Who is to say that conditions would be so favourable if he waited until the next touted date of May 2008?
So is now the moment to strike? Should Brown take the plunge and call an election so soon after finally ending his 10-year wait for power?

I think there was a great deal of disapointment in the country when john major succeded Margaret Thatcher without an election, I do not think Gordon Brown will command the respect of the nation until he has won an election in his own right Go for it!
- Posted by Mr Peter MarcheseYes, because he has no mandate to do anything. Cameron’s an unknown quantity, the old Minger’s too decrepit and desperate for power, so an election on a cold wet windy winter day when most tratitional Labour voters stay at home the outcome should be a tiny turnout and a hung Parliament - that would just about sum up the Country’s apathy to politicians and politics, I’d say.
- Posted by Iain MacfarlaneI dislike the behaviour of the New Labour Party. Blair was unbelievably awful. This man Brown with his smug smile after what he has done to our pension schemes, and what he is continuing to do with our country disregarding the avowed will of the general public: he is just beyond the pale. The trouble is I’d like to usher in Mr Camerons lot with a useful majority, but he won’t promise to protect the UK from the EEC or from immigration…..so there is not much of an alternative. Purely on balance, I would support any move to dislodge the Labour Party if only to make them listen to, and obey, the will of the majority…..
- Posted by MickI think it wrong that Gordon Brown should be able to call a snap election in order to extend his term in office before his economic chickens come home to roost.
