Should parents be warned about obese children?

obesityThe government is considering proposals to send letters to parents of obese children, warning  them of the health dangers of their offspring carrying so much excess weight.

The letters could be sent when children are routinely weighed in primary school at the age of five and 10.

A lot of parents, says one health expert, seem to be unaware that their children’s body mass index is way over recommended limits and that a warning letter might be a help.

But others say  getting a “fat letter” would be humiliating and may have the effect of stigmatising children.

What do you think? Could an official warning letter make parents of obese children think twice or is more robust action needed?
