New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer has informed his most senior administration officials that he had been involved in a prostitution ring, the New York Times reported on its Web site. The newspaper, citing a source, reported he was wiretapped arranging to meet a prostitute at a Washington D.C. hotel last month.
“I failed to live up to the standards I set up for myself. Now I stand to regain the trust of my family,” Spitzer told a packed room of reporters. He said nothing about possibly resigning.
What do you think is next for the New York governor?

He should resign and be prosecuted. Hes a disgrace.
- Posted by KimWhy is it when a Democrat does the despicable, it isn’t reported as Democratic NY Gov Spitzer. If this was a Republician, his party affiliation would be a big deal. Thats what you would hear on MSNBC and other news media.
I feel badly for his wife and children…….
- Posted by saraFor those who may have had any doubt, Spitzer’s fall should show there is a God!
In this particular case I hopw that the rath falls upon him. It won’t I’m sure because he is one of the “GOOD? ole Boys”. A slap on the wrist a hug and a kiss will most likely be his punishment.
Jail time would be far more appropriate though.
Glass houses, Hmmmm!
- Posted by SteveWho cares what the man does in private. And as far as for breaking the law, please, everyone has broken the law in one way or the other. No one in politics today is “CLEAN”. BE REAL!!!
- Posted by ToekneeHe’s a slime ball. How can he be in office and be supposedly protecting people and working with women and have this kind of thing going on? This action requires him to resign. This is pure sliminess and disgusting. He is not fit to hold office.
- Posted by CathyWhile I agree that no one in politics is “clean” these days - someone who touts his ethical virtues as did Spitzer should have exercised particular care in his extra-political activities. I just fail to understand how he could not see that this would lead directly to his demise. Adultery, while amoral, is not illegal and probably would not have received the same reaction from the public.
- Posted by JessieI notice none of the right-wingers are saying “The “N.Y. Times” in the same pejorative way they usually do today.
It’s amazing when the press gives a Democrat grief (like four years of non-existent Whitewater nonsense) it’s just glossed over. However, when the press hits a Republican, it’s part of a vast MSM conspiracy. (P.S. Goebbels convinced his people not to listen to anything but HIS press too.)
Well, here is that leftist, pinko, Commie N.Y. Times doing what they’re supposed to be doing as a free press: bringing light to subjects people don’t want light on. And as usual, it doesn’t matter if it’s a sleazy N.Y. Democrat or a sleazy Idaho Republican. Damn that MSM!

“Now I stand to regain the trust of my family”
So presumptious. Like your wife’s ever going to trust you after that.
- Posted by mimiperhaps his closet is full of skeletons. did anyone ever check? sounds like he made some new friends during his witch hunt days as atty. general. this is clearly a case of someone living in a glass house. i feel terrible for his wife and childen.
- Posted by joeDivorce and public humiliation? He should resign since it’s simply silly to think he can be taken seriously. He’s been a pushy bully in politics, so he can’t expect a break just because he said “I’m sorry”. If he had cheated on his wife it’d be bad enough, but breaking the law!
- Posted by Would like to be anonymousMost of Wall Street is laughing right now. Rule of thumb…don’t throw stones when you live in a glass house!!!!

Spitzer should resign before he humiliates the Democratic party which is still leaking its sores from the last Clinton scandal. He should make way for the decent and honest David Paterson.
If the Governor’s office is the highest in the state, then it follows that its holder should be one of good and impecable character.
Spitzer should do what is right and resign. Clinton should be ashamed of herself and eat crow for accussing Obama for not making tough decisions when called upon.
Hillary wasted her opportunity for standing-up for her NY constituents, by not calling for Spitzers resignation. Goes to show the kind of poor judgment she would make as the president; worse yet, goes to show the kind of adminstration she would run; one that tolerates promiscuity.

- Posted by Grapevine DailyMost of you will stop your “HE MUST RESIGN NOW” talk in a few days, just give yourselves some time. Eliot Spitzer’s record speaks for itself, and any of you can twist it by saying he is being hypocritical by doing this one act of misjudgement, but he was NOT LIEING when he told NY he will go AND HAS BEEN on a crusade. This is what really matters. He is a smart man and a once-in-a-lifetime attorney and politician, and we must not misjudge this single act of stupidity for what he has been trying to do.
The saddest part of all of this is how those who havent really followed him throughout his career as AG are comparing him to the scum a lot of our other politicians have been.
- Posted by PayamI just read the entire 55-page government press release. he prosecuted people for the same crimes he himself has committed. he is guilty of a federal crime in violating the Mann Act (1910). arranging for prostitution across state lines. he needs to step down. immediately.
- Posted by Once/alwaysaMarineTo many people, he has shown himself to be arrogant and self-righteous. He was perceived as a power-crazed crusader on a witch-hunt. He was harsh and heavy-handed in his treatment of others, misusing his authority in intrusive investigations.
His many enemies are now greeting this news with sadist pleasure.
Having said that, why are we, as a public, so fascinated with sex scandals? What people do in their private time is their own business, whether it’s having sex with prostitutes, having sex with interns, having sex that is not technically sex, or having kinky sex.
So what, if he paid money for it. Hey, we have to pay for everything else in life. Why not sex?
Besides, we’re all human. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone!
- Posted by RayHe should resign, if only because this shows how stupid he can be. He was the AG for 8 years and he was foolish enough to engage in this kind of behavior without doing a good job of hiding it (Not that its ok to do such things, but I would think he would have know how to hide it better). Also showed that he lacks the moral compass to represent NY or led it away from the decayed state it is in.
- Posted by JoeIt’s just a shame that during the most influential time for democrats this has to come out. Shame on you Governor!
- Posted by SaxophoneGODHe built his image on cleaning up everyone else’s life. Now it is time for him to clean up his by resigning.
- Posted by R JonesHis conduct is a discredit to all of the thousands of NY National Guard members–who would be severely disciplined in similar circumstances–perhaps made to retire or face a courts martial.
He has disgraced his family and the office he holds. Appropriate moral and ethical conduct is expected from key executive officers like Governor’s and President’s, he has failed in this endeavor.
The best thing for all would be for him to remove himself from his position of public trust.
- Posted by Praetorian, Fort MyersI’m tired of everybody riding their own personal ethical high horse. Everyone, at one point, has done something of poor judgement, told a lie, or done something illegal. Ever run a red light, drive through a stop sign, or not tell the entire truth on your taxes? I agree that a governor should have high ethical standards, but the man admited he made a mistake. At least he didn’t deny it. Yes , he made a mistake, he committed a crime and violated a law that was put on the book 100 years ago before women had the right to vote and were more or less considered property. His record shows how he really feels about things and this instance, while indeed terrible, simply shows that good people can have bad judgement sometimes. Nobody possesses perfect judgement all the time. I hope he does not resign. It would be a tragedy for NY State.
- Posted by AprilWhat I do not understand is if he used public funds for his liasons. If the answer is “Yes” then he should be ousted. if he used his personal money then I am not so sure. Seems like the GOP has nothing better to go after democrats than getting a little Strange. Meanwhile the GOP funnels all taxpayer money into the war machine and ultimately, GOP pockets. thats much more palatible than getting a little nookey on the side, isn’t it?
- Posted by GreggSpitzer did something very stupid. Anyone who exhibits holier than thou attitude needs to avoid any appearance of unlawful activity. I
- Posted by Lukespackdon’t think having sex with a prostitute is really the public’s business. It is just the fact he was so clean in the public’s eye before becoming client # 9. Things done in private by consenting adults should be left private.
The age of the computer leaves very little privacy for anyone. Just routine computer checking leaves our private lives open to the state. I say hang in there Eliot and become more sensitive to others. You can still do good things as governor.
Mr. Spitzer should not resign!
- Posted by Hollier ThanThouThe Puritans and Republicans can pound sand as far as I am concerned.
Stay out of the pants you hippocrits!
Let politicians be human.
Let’s not place them on pedastals.
They are not saints.
His crime is against his wife only. She is free to seek a divorce if she chooses.
His whole career has been about taking on the big guys for benefit of the little guys.
Mr. Spitzer,
It’s about time some one fought this sort of smear campaign head-on. Stay in office. You have my vote and I am sure a lot of other humans out there.
Next project, by the way, should be to get rid of Dubya’s ability to illegally tap phones.
Does anyone have any idea how many husbands live in sexless marriages. Does anyone know how many wives beg their husbands not to divorce them for the sake of the kids but give them the okay to get their sex somewhere else. Maybe this is the case. Maybe he wanted out of his marriage long ago and he stayed to take care of the wife and kids out of obligation and did the prostitute thing hoping it would be kept secret out of respect for his wife. No one knows the facts here except that he did break the law.
