Share your airline travel woes

Most would agree that the days of stress-free air travel are over. As the airline industry grapples with unprecedented oil prices that have almost doubled in the past year, carriers are now eking out profits any way they can, including adding fuel surcharges, cutting back services and eliminating flights.

The moves have left passengers complaining about cramped, crowded and frequently delayed flights, and worse.

Everyone has a horror story – what is yours?


Gone are the days when air traval was beyond our expectation that we would had aspired for.Availing any air trip was indeed allurable then and might have generated malices in our mind while comparing in between, respect to the service rendered by other airlines concerned.Now the time has changed its’own turn with higher prices of fuel to frustrate us more and more by deteriorating the required custers’ satisfaction.Today’s air travel is not at all cost effective as well as secured.Anytime cancelation of stipulated air journey may be terminated due to some compelling mangement decision taken by air service concerned.Although we have to dwell with such unfavourable element and have to shoulder such inaffordable travel by air.


The fact that air travel has lost its pleasure is to state the obvious. The surprising part is that the American airlines are the ones whose bottom line seems to be the worst hit. Planes usually go full but they seem to always in the red and complaining of rising cost and falling revenues. Their services are also the worst in the world. How come Thai airlines or Air France have maintained the same service standards? We have had so many bad experiences of American airlines that we would prefer never to fly by them.

I have no idea what Hazra is saying, but I’ll share one recent horror story of many here. Due to “Air-traffic” our flight was about 20-minutes late getting into Chicago. Although we got to the gate about 10-minutes before the scheduled departure time, we were denied boarding… our seats had been sold. THat plane stay at the gate another 30-minutes at least due to some unexplained problem.

We were denied an overnight accomodation and were to either get one ourselves or sleep in the airport… no seats wre available to our destinatiin for at least a day and possibly more.

However 2-singles did open on the next flight out and we got to our destination weary and disgusted with our treatment.

Where to begin? The absurdity of the security rules: first it was powders, then liquids, whatever the most recent terrorist used–now how dumb do they think the terrorists are? Certainly smarter than the Department of Homeland Insecurity. Then of course there is the utter rudeness of so many of those who work at the security check lines–and they are paid with our money to boot. The airlines, makes little difference which one, offer less and less for more and more. But their CEO make a fortune. And they charge extra for baggage because of the weight, never taking into account that a three hundred pound passenger weighs twice as much as one who weighs one hundred and fifty pounds–if we are to pay by the weight we put on the plane, well then, let us be consistent. The stupidity of a dinner and a breakfast on a late night flight–do not need all that food, cannot sleep, and they are just wasting money. Well, one could write a book on this absurd industry. Why fly?

“On time” is a quaint relic of the recent past as airlines consolidate flights and juggle schedules on a day to day basis. In the future there will be “first class” airliners which will charge premium prices to get the executive class to their destinations on time. Premium carriers will essentially bribe airports ( which may be privatized ) to take off and land on schedule. Airlines will leave coach travelers to their scheduling whims. In the future, airlines will charge coach passengers for oxygen and price tickets by passenger and luggage weight – children not included.

Happily, I have no airline woes to report because I refuse to fly. If flying is the only way to get someplace, as far as I am concerned, it is not worth the stress, expense, hassle and grief to get there by air. I stay home. When the flying public finally realizes that flying is no longer worth the destination and quits flying, then, and only then, will the airlines improve in order to win back their customers. With the present state of the airline industry, unless people are flying for work, there is no good reason to travel by air. Vacations? forget it. By the the flying vacationer gets home they are so stressed by the flying experience that it would have been better to stay home thereby saving the money and frustration of flying.

Otis, just a quick question: When you bought your ticket, did you HAVE to connect through Chicago (one of the worst connecting airports in the world) or could you have gone through St. Louis, Detroit, Cleaveland, or Minneapolis? Did you reasearch airline customer service policies and satisfaction surveys? Did you check to see the on-time history of the flight you were taking? “Air Traffic” is a legitimate problem – too many airplanes not enough space (ever counted the number of RJ’s waiting to take off? They require the same amount of airspace around them as a 747.) but it is predictable and avoidable by a smart traveller.

What I bet you did was this: You went to a website, typed in your departure city and destination city and bought the cheapest ticket you could find.

If you want champaigne treatment, you have to pay for it. Right now you are paying for Pabst Blue Ribbon, and (surprise surprise!) that is what you are getting!!

Richard – Why fly? You don’t have to. Try Greyhound or Amtrack, or drive. All great choices. Let me know how it goes.

One thing I don’t understand is how these companies can get away with charging more for less. How is it possible for them to use security, fuel prices, etc, etc to mitigate their bad service. How can these companies have employees that are so incompetent that they can even make a rational decision or have a rational conversation with a paying customer (and don’t tell me they are following policies, there is a way to follow policies and there is a way of just being rude and obnoxious. And the worst part is that they know they can get away with it because we as consumers let them. Why are foreign airline companies able to cope with this while the US based airlines can’t?(and don’t blame the unions, it’s obvious with all the lay offs and pay cuts that the unions don’t have any power anymore)

And now they want to tack on fuel “charges”, what were we paying for previously?


American Airlines sucks because: American squeezed in two more rows in coach by placing rows closer together, using thinner seat padding. HOW CAN THEY BE PROUD OF THIS ?
