Berlusconi vows to stay in politics as ban approaches

ROME (Reuters) – Silvio Berlusconi defiantly vowed to stay at the center of Italian politics on Wednesday despite his expected expulsion from parliament over a fraud conviction, and accused leftist judges of plotting against him to pervert democracy.

In a long-awaited television address shortly before a Senate committee took a first step towards expelling him, the media magnate made no mention of his previous threats to bring down the left-right coalition government of Prime Minister Enrico Letta because of the conviction.

Analysis: Risk of Italian crisis recedes but respite may be brief

ROME (Reuters) – Silvio Berlusconi has pulled back from toppling the Italian government but the respite may be brief, and the fragile coalition remains too divided to pass reforms that the economy urgently needs.

The 76-year-old former prime minister did not follow through on threats to bring down the left-right government when he spoke on Wednesday about his conviction for tax fraud and sentencing to up to a year of house arrest or community service.

Berlusconi to make address before Senate expulsion vote

ROME, Sept 18 (Reuters) – Silvio Berlusconi will make a
nationwide television address on his political future shortly
before a preliminary Senate vote on Wednesday on his expulsion
from parliament, aides said.

But political sources and local media said he would not use
the address to torpedo the fragile left-right governing
coalition of centre-left Prime Minister Enrico Letta – at least
for now – despite weeks of threats to do so.

Berlusconi to support Italian government in video message: sources

ROME (Reuters) – Silvio Berlusconi is expected to step back from moves to bring down Italy’s government following his tax fraud conviction in an announcement on Tuesday relaunching his original party, political sources said.

Berlusconi has been threatening for weeks to torpedo the uneasy left-right coalition of Prime Minister Enrico Letta following his conviction, but the sources said dovish advisers seemed to have finally convinced him this could misfire for his center-right PDL party.

New poll could curb Berlusconi’s temptation to sink government

ROME, Sept 16 (Reuters) – An opinion poll on Monday showed
Silvio Berlusconi’s party falling behind its centre-left rivals
and could undermine the media tycoon’s temptation to bring down
Italy’s shaky coalition government over his tax fraud
conviction.

Allies of Berlusconi, 76, have been threatening for weeks to
bring down the left-right coalition of premier Enrico Letta if a
Senate committee meeting this week votes to bar him from
parliament.

Mafia hurt by asset seizures but still too strong to beat

NAPLES, Italy (Reuters) – Syringes litter the floor of an abandoned school in the crime-plagued Scampia district of northern Naples, alongside tin foil used for crack cocaine, a filthy mattress and piles of clothing.

What was once a classroom is smeared with human waste and Coca Cola bottles filled with urine are stacked in one corner, alongside an abandoned children’s toy.

Italian coalition close to breaking point over Berlusconi fate

ROME (Reuters) – Relations between the partners in Italy’s coalition government seemed close to breaking point on Thursday over whether to evict Silvio Berlusconi from parliament over a tax fraud conviction.

A row is raging between Berlusconi’s center-right People of Freedom (PDL) party and the center-left Democratic Party (PD) of Prime Minister Enrico Letta following the 76-year-old media mogul’s conviction by the supreme court early this month.
