Iran seems largely immune to sanctions. There is no indication that sanctions have slowed their nuclear progress. Total war is an interesting idea and is probably the only way, but the political will simply isn't there. This I foresee a time in the next five years when Iran will join the nuclear club. Will they bomb Tel Aviv, and see all of their major cities destroyed in retaliation? Unfortunately I think some scenario like that to be likely.

The simple - if unpleasant - truth is that this situation with the Iranian mullahs is not resolvable through the sort of constrained, highly limited military adventures that have characterized every undeclared war in the post-WWII world. If we are to seriously end the cancer of an aggressive, fanatical and fascist Iran, the Free World has no choice but to formally declare war and then resolutely follow through with total war... to the absolute defeat of the enemy (as with Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan), the occupation and reconstruction of their country and the physical destruction of the criminal clique which has taken their nation down this road to oblivion. It will take commitment and sacrifice on our part which many will find unpalatable, but no part-way measures will permanently free the world from the mullahs' endless threats and aggressions. If we are unwilling to do what is really necessary now - as in the 1930s - the war will come anyway... and our losses will be much greater.
