Currently only 10 percent of cellphones contain Global Positioning System (GPS) technology, but as we reported Wednesday, chip maker SiRF predicts that by 2011 most cellphone handsets sold will include GPS. If you’ve ever held a hefty traditional handheld GPS unit you may wonder whether adding this technology to phones will increase their bulk. This photo may put your mind at ease.
The smallest chip is the newest GPS chip from SiRF, the middle one includes a Bluetooth connection (for a wireless connection with other devices that can use GPS coordinates). The top one is last year’s GPS chip. (Photo/Tarmo Virki)
