Texas has begun sending undercover agents into bars to arrest drinkers for being drunk. It’s not exactly a needle in a haystack sort of assignment, since bars tend to have alcohol and people tend to go there to drink it.
The idea is to get to the drunks before they do something dangerous, like drive a car. The first sting operation was conducted in a Dallas suburb where agents infiltrated 36 bars and arrested 30 people for public intoxication.

This is just one of the ways that Bush’s doctrine of “preemptive war” has inspired local law enforcement officials.
- Posted by Jon SwiftI didn’t realize that being drunk in a bar was a crime. In the “perfect” world that so many want to create for us - this sounds like a good idea.
Get to the problem before it becomes a problem and hurts us.
This is another example of the steady assault on individual liberties and the erosion of the protections within the constitution.
Did the police have evidence that those “drunks” were going to drive while intoxicated? They had access to a bartender to call a cab or friend - didn’t they?
