Credit Suisse analyst Michael Masdea took a novel approach to stock research when he recorded — and then sent to select clients — his cover of Eminem’s Oscar-winning song “Lose Yourself” to accompany his research note upgrading the microchip industry.
Masdea’s August 16 report was standard Wall Street research fare, peppered with observations such as, “Low-beta, muted cycle dynamics continue to play out and suggest limited fundamental downside” and “On the positive side, technology penetration of global GDP should continue to increase as it is deflationary and drives productivity”.
But the semiconductor sector’s fundamentals apparently spurred Masdea’s inner hip-hop muse into action. In a two-minute audio file obtained by Reuters, Masdea waxes lyrical about why it’s the right time to buy chip stocks. Here are a few choice lyrics:
He’s nervous
But on the surface
He looks calm and ready
To buy semisAnd:
You better lose yourself
In the cycle, the moment
You own it, you’d better
Never let it go
You only get one shot, do not
Miss your chance to buy
The best part? The disclosure at the end, which we excerpted for you here. Finish drinking or swallowing anything before listening to it.
A Credit Suisse representative declined to comment on the audio file, but confirmed it was created and sent by Masdea. Masdea was not immediately reachable for comment.
