David Stern, the commissioner of the National basketball Association, came to speak at the Reuters Media Summit, covering topics from international expansion and TV deals to selling a stake in such properties as NBA TV and NBA.com.
Here’s are a few excerpts from the interview with Reuters reporter Ben Klayman:
On negotiating a new TV distribution deal to follow its current six-year, $4.6 billion deal with ESPN, ABC and TNT:
“We have begun the discussions a couple of years early. We would very much like to remain in business with our current partners.”
“I would say it’s going to be a larger deal. We expect a healthy increase.”
On allowing a media company to take a stake in its digital assets, which include NBA TV and NBA.com:
“We are thinking about expanding the ownership base of our digital assets to include a media company. We anticipate a new deal will make both NBA TV and NBA.com more robust. We have made it clear that for us a discussion of all of our assets on a global scale is available.”
On establishing an NBA-branded league in China:
“The model that we’re working on now is the placement of all of our assets in China in an enterprise with all NBA rights,” including the right to operate a league “such as NBA of China.”
