Jayson Blair, back?

Jayson Blair, the reporter who left The New York Times in disgrace over fabricated articles in 2003, is trying the journalism thing again. Sort of.

Blair published a piece last year in bp magazine, which is dedicated to bipolar disorder, the Boston Herald reported. The story detailed the role that mental illness played in his downfall at the Times, the Herald said. Blair wasn’t the only casualty, of course — He took down former managing editor Gerald Boyd (who died last month at 56), and executive editor Howell Raines.

He also wrote about his dog’s death for the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance newsletter, and is working on a writing project but can’t talk about it, the Herald also reported.

More from the Herald: ”The single Blair says he’s self-employed and working full time in a ‘profitable retail business.’ He’s also working toward a college degree in business communications.”

As for the nuts-and-bolts aspect of original reporting, Blair told the Herald that he ”had to quit working on a second piece earlier this year because he said he ‘was not up to doing a fully reported piece.’”

Giving Jayson a degree in Bus Communications would be like giving OJ Simpson a degree in criminal justice.

Jayson Blair is not returning to journalism. Even he thinks that the prospect of a return is a tad far fetched. However, he can put one word after another and make a sentence. In that regard, he is doing a little bit to help others who suffer with bi-polar disorder, also known as manic depression. It is a pretty devastating illness. Many manic-depressives end as suicides. Notable among them is Phil Graham, the late publisher of the Washington Post.

Jayson is going through a tough patch medically. For that reason I do not think we will hear from him for a while. I write this as his long-time friend and press representative. Jayson’s story for Bi-Polar Magazine was published a year ago. I am amazed that it took so long for anyone in the media to notice the byline.
