A diamond-studded TV set is Philips Electronics’ way to remind visitors to
the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that the company has sold one million of its special flat TVs with coloured background lights.
The Dutch consumer electronics giant’s “Ambilight” technology lights up the wall behind a TV in colours that are designed to enhance the images viewers see on the screen.
Philips hit the 1 million “ambilight” TV set threshold several months ago, but it did not have its celebratory TV set ready at the time, officials said. It’s a one-of-a-kind item that is not for sale to consumers, they added.
But the sparkles from the 2,000 diamonds added a bit of glitter to the TV experience in a presentation otherwise light on news.
Europe’s biggest consumer electronics company continues its “ambi” story with amBX for gaming (light, surround sound and a fan that blows wind in the hair of the game player) and Ambisound speakers, a brand extension which has nothing to do with light but which offers an immersive sound environment.
