Microsoft’s TV, gaming social network

Microsoft president of entertainment and devices Robbie Bach took the stage after chairman Bill Gates sketched the company’s vision of the connected devices world.

Bach spent his turn at the mic laying out its plans to stitch together a world of connected entertainment. Among the more intriguing ideas – the Xbox Live social network. Think of it as the MySpace of TV. “We’re now the largest social network on TV — 5 million members. It’s unprecedented and unexpected two years ago,” he told the more than 4,000 Consumer Electronics Show attendees on Sunday night.

This summer, Bach expects the ranks in the Xbox gaming social network to soar higher still when Xbox Live will connect to PCs for gaming. Until now, Xbox 360s could only link with PC-based pictures, music and videos.

Reached afterwards at a cocktail reception hosted by Microsoft, Bach told Reuters reporter Daisuke Wakabayashi that Microsoft aims to launch three to four “in-depth” games that will let PC players compete with Xbox Live users with the same game on their Xbox 360s. He declined to nail down specific targets for how quickly the Microsoft gaming social network could climb.
