The Los Angeles Times is not the only newspaper in California trying to figure out how to make more money off the Web. McClatchy’s paper, The Sacramento Bee, will try to convince readers to shell out $499 a year to get insider-y tips on Washington and state politics.
Here are the details from the Sacramento Business Journal: “The Sacramento Bee on Wednesday announced the launch of Capitol Alert, an online site featuring political news and information — the latest effort to grab new readers and generate more revenue as the newspaper industry struggles. Capitol Alert — an online subscription costs $499 a year — will cover the Capitol and state government.”
To put that in context, The Politico, a new independent politics news site, whose editorial staff lineup of Beltway A-listers, is free. Maybe they know something in Sacramento that we don’t….
