Seen and not heard at Davos?

My colleague Alex Smith writes: The WEF invites spouses of the great and the good to its annual meeting in Davos but they don’t usually get stuck into the nitty gritty of the sessions.

Not so Judy Moody-Stuart, who has been married to Anglo-American Plc Chairman Sir Mark Moody-Stuart for the past 44 years and whose current projects include setting up a university for Asian women in Bangladesh.

Modestly introducing herself as “the wife of a businessman”, Lady Moody-Stuart — a self-styled activist Quaker — asked a panel on the future of the Middle East if they thought it would help create peace if the United Nations moved from New York to Jerusalem. Her question got short-shrift from the moderator who asked for a show of hands on the idea and then dismissed it as a non-starter based on the audience’s response.

Lady Moody-Stuart wasn’t in the least bit put off by the reception and stands by her idea. “Doesn’t it sound a good idea to you?” she asked me brightly after the event.

One comment so far

By the way, these are my four reasons for suggesting that the UN move from NY to Jerusalem - not in any significant order -
the US government and people seem to not want, nor respect the current UN operation;
many of the current NY-based UN Diplomats arrive late, make pre-prepared statements then just swan off from a General Assembly session without listening to other countries interventions - a more appropriate and engaged sort of diplomat would be attracted to a UN HQ service located in Jerusalem
the financial spin-off to business from hosting the UN diplomats would go into the Israel-Palestine Middle East economy rather than the already-rich New York City;
the city of Jerusalem would be designated international and administered by Israel and Palestine (as with Spitsbergen/Svalbard which is currently administered by Norway for the international community post WWII)and this would solve the Three Abrahamic Religions ownership-issue
