General Electric Chief Executive Jeffrey Immelt called Tuesday’s announcement that Jeff Zucker will succeed Bob Wright as chief executive of NBC Universal “the worst kept secret in the history of business” during a media conference call.
With few details about the potential fallout, the media world was left wondering what other management changes are in store at NBCU now that Zucker, 41, has officially been promoted. Zucker’s gig as the top executive of the television business will not be filled. “But we will have a few organization announcements shortly,” Zucker told reporters.
Here’s how The New York Times breaks it down based on their own unnamed sources in today’s paper ahead of the announcement:
- “Marc Graboff, who is now president of NBC Universal Television West Coast, will be given added supervisory duties over NBC’s entertainment division in California.
- “Beth Comstock, who is president of NBC’s digital and marketing division, and Jeff Gaspin, who heads up the company’s cable operations, will also take on new responsibilities.”
Those executives — especially Comstock — were among the names believed to be in the running with Zucker to take over for Wright, according to media reports. The questions are how Zucker’s existing duties get carved up and which also-rans may consider their options.
Immelt: “I think as we went through the transition over the last couple of years, we wanted to test some people by giving them broader responsibilities and unique jobs, which we did with Jeff.”
“Now that Jeff is the lead guy there’s probably leaner and … more direct ways to run the organization that Jeff is going to have to put in place.”
