How I met your mother, NYTimes.com-style

The New York Times will start soliciting video from readers of its Web site, beginning with couples whose nuptials are announced in the paper’s “Weddings and Celebrations” section.

The news is a nice scoop from Beet.tv, which notes that this is the Times’ first foray into user-generated video. Web wedding videos are currently shot by Times videographers, a company spokeswoman said.

Here’s more: “The first videos will be of engaged couples in a series titled ‘How We Met.’  Beginning this week, the couples will be offered the opportunity to upload a three minute video using a simple tool on the Weddings and Celebrations page. Not all the wedding announcements submitted to The Times are used.  The Times will only post videos of announcements which are accepted for print publication.”

The video interview between Beet’s Andy Plesser and the Times’ Nicholas Ascheim, director of entertainment, video & audio products, also is interesting.

In a separate Web-related announcement, the Times said on Wednesday that it is providing a “share and view” Web site for people to show off their collectible cars.

* Full disclosure: The real-world example that Plesser uses is of my Reuters TV reporter and colleague Bobbi Rebell. It’s a coincidence.
