The New York Times crosses Google

You can thank The New York Times for the latest way to kill a few idle hours at work. The paper is adding a touch of gray to the rainbow-colored Google homepage with recycled editions of its crossword puzzle.

The “Classic Crossword Widget” will feature a rotating selection from an archive of more than 1,000 puzzles, the Times said in a press release.

For Internet-using crossword aficionados, this is like chocolate meeting peanut butter. But as with any addictive substance, there is a downside: The puzzle will be updated once a week. In theory, this would lead those of you needing a fix to the premium site on nytimes.com where you would spend $39.95 a year or $6.95 a month to get more.

Dropping that wad of cash, of course, will help the Times crew get a tiny step closer to solving clue No. 1-Across: “How to survive troubled times for newspapers.”
