Watch out Tiger Woods. Yahoo co-founder and KKR co-founder Henry Kravis talked about a recent day on the links. Turns out they golf like they do business: ruthlessly.
Here’s what Yang had to say at a luncheon for the Committee of 100 about Kravis:
“Don’t let the nice demeanor fool you, because Henry is extremely competitive. I’m reminded of a golf outing we had recently at a nice golf course.”
Trailing the other twosome with nine holes left to play, Kravis and Yang needed to rally, he recounted: “Henry comes up behind me and says, ‘Let’s get these guys’ and starts to pull out these private equity terms. You know, ‘Hey let’s recap these guys, and let’s rework them, and we’re gonna resell them!’”
That seems to have done the trick. “The competitive juices got going and we did win the match,” said Yang.
Yang himself has a bit of a reputation around golf courses, at least the one at his alma mater, according to Kravis: “The Great One,” Kravis said of Yang. “You don’t know this, but in California, at Stanford University, on the driving range, that’s his name.”
