Hello Mal,

I wonder if you could tell me the serial number of the 1200-1700 Nikkor? I maintain the Nikon lens website at www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/lenses.html and have only ever come across one before - for sale on ebay. The serial number will give me some idea how many of this lens were made.

Best Regards,
Roland

Hi Mal,

Thanks a lot for sharing with us your experience with this legendary lens! How the hell did you succeed to find a used one??!! Did you find it in Paris (I do think so since I know most of the rpo-reseller here...)? Do not hesitate to contact me by private e-mail if you want to sell it someday...

Maybe next year you can use it with a D300 and TC20e - That would be 5200mm (35mm eq.) at f11~16... :D
I hope you use it with one of those Nikon-EOS adaptors and didn't destroy it for further use with Nikon Cameras ;)

Hello,

The 1200-1700mm Nikon lens is no longer in the Nikon catalogue. It was produced in very limited quantity in the 90's. We aquired ours as a used model. I dont know what the original price used to be.
Here is a link about the lens.

How much does the 1200-1700mm f5.6 IF-ED Nikon zoom cost, pray tell? Is it available in stores or is it made to order?
Your response will be deeply appreciated!

Hi Mal

May I just say a photographers blog is a great idea, I came across the TDF piece and then saw this.

I was aware of the existence of this lens, but the photo's I've seen don't do it justice - it's absolutely enormous.

It's great to see one in use and capturing images still.

Can I ask what's the minimum focus distance like, and does the focus shift when zoomed?

Best

Hi Denis,
We sgtrive to seek out useful equipment wherever it may lurk! To answer your question, no, we did not have this lens for the Pope story it was aquired afterwards. But we did had at our disposal two (yes two)1200mm 5.6 Canon lenses which gave us a nice edge on quality coverage. We also used the 300-800 sigma at the Vatican too.
For your info the 1200-1700 is very bright when you look though it, as adverse to the earlier Nikon 200mm f.11 mirror lens I used at the Vatican during Pope Jean Paul I and II elections. At 2 stops down (f.11) the 1200/1700 is Summicron sharp!
cheers

This lens was not used for the pope ?
