Also, everyone keeps saying China Made products are cheaper...

What is this "Cheaper" kick everyone is on with the Chinese made products. To me "Cheaper means the same identical product made the same identical way at a lower cost than an identical product. This is not the case with what everyone is classifying as "Cheaper".

China is great at making fakes and we are the victims of the biggest "Bait and Switch" in history. You buy a hammer at WalMart which looks identical to an earlier USA made hammer. Oh yes....it is $2.50 instead of $9.50 but is it really cheaper? It isn't the same hammer...it is made with different products and glued rather than soldered together....so IT REALLY ISN'T CHEAPER!! It is actually more expensive....especially when it was made without quality control and lasts the fraction of the time as a well made tool.

A Kia is cheaper than a Mercedez, 300 thread count sheets are cheaper than 600 thread count sheets but they are not the same!!! I think the American public has been brainwashed into the perception that China made products are cheaper when they aren't even the same thing. They may look like, be boxed the same, etc (the great "FAKE") but they are not the same thing.

We need to test for more than Lead.....I have been hearing rumblings of other elements in some of the products such as arsenic, cyanide, dioxin, etc. A woman on a blog against Walmart bought some cheap flip-flops which gave her chemical burns on her feet. She thought it was unique to her until the blog...then found out there were other people with the same problem.

These chemicals can cause all kinds of health effects ....and being unaware that they are there..we would never know the source.

I feel that the top class PR work done in this crisis management situation has really tweaked the situation to a Mattel advantage! The emotive advertising campaign has showed a cleverly manipulative campaign that only a structually quick and sharp team could have put together! (must have done marketing101 at uct!!)

Recalled toys are now being sold on Ebay!!! I read this in a newspaper from Clinton Indiana. The toys the manufacturers have recalled are now finding their way to Ebay Auctions. Although Ebay has a policy that recalled products should not be on the site...they can't enforce it!!!

Where are the returned toys going? Are they being destroyed or added to the landfill in China where they can break down the parts and make something else out of it?

Also, I read on the Asian News site that Chinese push more products to the USA by changing the labels and saying they are made elsewhere.

Does anyone know of a consumer lab or consumer watchdog group that would test some of the suspect Chinese Products? I want to test for harmful chemicals that are beyond the lead in toys.

What else is being kept quiet!! Outside of dog treats and lead in Toys.

There needs to be a place to take our products to be tested to find out what is really in them? What about other more deadly chemicals that we could consume, rub into our skin, or wear? The US Manufacturers send their toxic waste to China and are using China as a landfill. This waste includes products that cannot be rid of here in the US. The people in China disassemble these products and break them down into powders, metals, etc. then they are used again in the manufacturer of products that sent back to us for resale.

I watched a special report on one of the new stations about China selling billions of dollars of fake drugs to retailers here in the US. Vitamin supplements aren't what you think they are and are never inspected.

I wonder about Walmart's Pharmacy and Vitamin supplements. If I had someplace to take the products I buy to be tested I would. And once I found out that they are tainted I would notify anyone I could to protect them.

Are their labs that will test for chemicals. Dyes in clothing, lotions, soaps, and even plastic straws or cups we use (anything made in China). Someplace you could test supplements to see if they are what they claim to be. Somekind of Consumer watchdog lab!!!!

I read where some of China's own bridges are collapsing due to construction with shoddy materials and poor engineering. How do you think they make our products?

We need to start somewhere and exposure and boycotting is one way. Lawsuits is another. And maybe a website of all reputable Toy Manufacturers in the United States. The small Mom and Pop shops that are proud of their products. People wait in line to spend a fortune on an "X-Box"....how about spending a little more for a little less and bringing peace of mind and safety to your children.

This isn't just about the lead in the toys...
it is about corruption, lies and money. Everything coming from China should be held to the same standards as the manufacturers in the United States...but there is money involved at the top and it won't happen. China has so much pollution and toxicity in its streams, rivers and natural resources, there is virtually nothing that would not have some portion of it in the products sent to us.

Toys are the tip of the iceberg. What about the plastic baby bottles, bibs and toys babies chew on. What about the dyes in our clothing and the chemicals used to treat products in their manufacturer. If these products were inspected more closely...we would be shocked to find out what is in them!!!!! The ingredients for many manufacturers here in the USA come from China (for instance I heard on the radio that one of the toothpaste recall companies say that they buy the ingredients that go into their toothpaste from China). This same company executive said that they wouldn't change their policy on purchasing the ingredients from China because they are cheaper. I guess what we need to do as consumers is to bring lawsuits against these companies to make a point and to indicate that our health is more important!!!

There are fake drugs and vitamin supplements coming from China that look so much like the real thing ....they are difficult to tell apart. The difference of course would be the ingredients such as cement, cooking oil and powder. How would you feel if you were taking something for a heart condition only to find out that it was a pill of cement or oil. And these are not black market things...they are being sold to major distributors and pharmacies. Think of the money in it...selling a drug at market price with 20 cents worth of ingredients in it.

Corruption is rampant between the politicians in our country and the politicians in China.....Big businesses own our politicians and use the Chinese slave laborers for manufacturing shoddy products...the money only going into the pockets of the dirty politicians and executives.. Prices have not dropped that much since the changeover from USA made to China. Some things have actually increased in price. Who is getting the money????!!!!

Take a look at the big "W" (China Mart)... they are the biggest purchaser of Chinese goods and have their own factories in China. For some reason politicians give them huge subsidies to build their stores in their locale. Something smells of kickback here....the connection between Walmart, China and the heads of state is a big one.

If anyone ever had the guts to do an insider investigation on this...the results would be interesting. Follow the subsidies to the local politicians bank accounts or assets then and follow the money trail to corruption.

Wow!!!! Just watched CNN News at 5:00PM and there was a segment regarding the Toy Recall.

Feds are saying they can't check everything since they only have around 100 inspectors; these toxic toys are still on the shelves of many stores.

Mattel says they have the most stringent standards of all of the Toy manufacturers. If that is the case what does that say about the rest of them.

They won't given anyone their money back ....just vouchers to get another toy..

I am infuriated. I have grandchildren and my daughter says she wants her money back and not another toy from the same place that tried to poison the kids in the first place. She is tired of going to "China Mart" to buy things but don't know what to do.

There was a GrandMother on the same CNN program and she says she is looking for USA made toys but cannot find them... Where are the manufacturers of USA toys so we can buy them? Buy fewer and safer toys made in our own country.

One other note, I read where IRAN is making deals with China against the USA. How easy would it be for the terrorists to poison us through the toxic products China sends to us. We wouldn't know what would hit us before it was too late. China gains from both sides...money from IRAN to do us in and money from the American consumer to line their pockets. I consider this a major security threat to our country.

Time to stand up to protect our children and our country.

Concerned Granny

Mothers ...you banded together to form "Mad Mothers Against Drunk Drivers"...how about joining together to form "Mad Mothers Against Toxic Toys". Have a protest or march in Washington for the cause!!

For the past 3 years, Mattel has aggressively brought legal proceedings against my company, Super Duper Publications. We publish therapy materials for special needs children. Our sin? We use the word Say in many of our products, and Mattel doesnt like it. Instead of focusing on the safety of their own product line, they choose to spend time and money fighting us over a word.
I wonder if the stock holders and board of directors of Mattel have any idea of this situation!!! Heres a novel idea: Maybe Mattel should leave honest Mom and Pop business people alone and concentrate instead on better product safety and development in their own backyard!

C'mon, you want me to believe the corporate toy makers didn't previously know their products had issues? They are only coming out with it now because it's the thing to do nowadays. They have turned a blind eye to this for years so they can use dirt cheap labor overseas.

It seems like every day we're seeing a new recall story including most pointing towards China. I do wonder if perhaps all the media coverage of recalls is similar to the "shark attack hype" we experienced in the Summer of 2001??

Regardless, it's a shame these major retail companies and other manufacturers can't utilize the technologies available today to help mitigate some of these recall situations. Either way I hope to see the amount of recalls declining as we progress forward. Thanks for the story, Sarah...I enjoy the blog!
