Even before the fun started on Thursday at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, the signs of movie madness were already there. The public lines up for tickets and reporters pore through press packs and work out how to squeeze writing-time in among the movies, news conferences and interviews. Last year’s press kit included not only the must-have list of press screenings and news conference schedules, but also a jar of anti-wrinkle cream, presumably to help the media pack survive the late nights and early mornings that go hand in hand with coverage of one of the world’s top film festivals. This year the only freebie is a small blue plastic pen. Is even this more than we deserve?

Don’t journalists need pens more than they need antiwrinkle cream? Makes sense to me. Also, isn’t there anything better to write about on the first day of the festival than what you got in your freebie bag?
