The Special one’s shock exit — your views

Jose Mourinho gestures during the FA Cup final this year. Dylan Martinez / ReutersJose Mourinho gets a rough send-off from some of Britain’s newspapers. Martin Samuel in the Times says his Chelsea team lacked the charisma of the man himself, while Kevin McCarra in the Guardian highlights the lack of adventure on the pitch during his time in charge.

Bloggers seem too surprised to have had much considered reaction yet.

“I’m still shocked that he’s gone,” write Who Ate All The Pies. “Who knows where he’ll end up now? I hope that he stays in the Premier League, but wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him go to Spain or Italy.”

Chelseablog were also thinking about the future in their overnight timeline: ”01:23 - First mention of Sven-Goran Erikssons name in the Sun newspaper. God help us.”!

In an interesting piece at  Soccerlens, Ahmed Bilal speculates about a possible Mourinho move to Tottenham. More on that later.

For Reuters, soccer correspondent Mike Collett writes admiringly about the Mourinho effect on Chelsea:

“From the day Mourinho arrived at Chelsea from Porto in June 2004 the charismatic Portuguese infused his club with a sense of self-belief it had never truly possessed in almost 100 years of a fairly mundane and under-achieving existence.”

We’d like your views on Mourinho’s time at Chelsea. Did the coach do enough with the almost unlimited resources he had at his disposal (at least early on)? Do you agree that he could have been more adventurous? And does his departure, and the news that Avram Grant is taking over, spell bad news for the club? Let us know via the comments.

From day one I developed mixed feeling about him.
On one hand I wanted Chelsea to take the monopoly away from Manchester and Arsenal.
On the other hand I never liked his style of play.He never gave Chelsea
a style which could be compared with the great teams. He was defensive in his approach, and never created a reconizable game pattern of which one could say this is a great team!
He set his mind on wining trophies now and not on building an attractive team with winning as a bonouse (as is the case with Arsenal).
Yes, he was charismatic and made us all lough at times ,but that has nothing to do with being a great coach.I don’t think he was and I don’t think he will ever be.He was lucky to catch Arsenal and Manchester during a transition period
and took advantage of it.He is going now because he knows very well that his time is over.
He is leaving behind a team without a character and without a style.Just a banch of so called stars with no binding chemistry, which he failed to create.

He was a translator at Barca for Bobby Robson. That’d be quite a career path if he want back as coach!

I’m no Chelsea fan but his exit is a loss to English football. I wonder if he’ll go back to Spain now. Didn’t he start at Barcelona? Wouldn’t be surprised if they have a vacancy soon.

Jose had his ego, agreed but why not. Look at his record in the past, winning everything there was to win for Porto and winning every cup in England, for Chelsea. Given a chance he could surely have got his hands on the Champions league trophy. He was not wrong when he said he is the “chosen one.”

Alas Roman thinks otherwise. He feels no matter how good the coach is and trophies he gets, the owner who controls the money purse, will always be bigger. He’s surely going to pay the price for not giving Jose a chance to finish his contract.

Jose was a fun to watch in the Premier league. Be it his comments in press conferences and off the touch line, or him removing invisible cards from his coat, and showing them to rival players during matches… He will be definitely missed.

Jose will be missed, just like Vialli was. What did Ranieri achieve afterwards? Also, remember what happened to Blackburn after they last won the top division - not a lot to show since then. I think we (CFC) will struggle for some time now. The England job would be a good call for Jose, as he is a winner, and that is what we all need.

It’s Over! Thank goodness. I couldn’t stand him or his egomaniacal nature and boring football. As a Gunner, I am happy to see him go.

But as a football supporter, I’m sad. He was one of the few who could stand up to Ferguson; one of the few who would speak his mind; one of the few who would light up a conference room. Despite his ego, he was one heck of a manager. Chelsea were a bunch of underachieving miscreants before he turned them into winners. Unless Chelsea gets Cappello, they will go back to their losing ways.

Reminds me of that movie, ‘Charlie.’ He gets this drug and suddenly becomes smart for a short while, but when the drug wears off, he’s back to the same.

My nick says it all, I’m a supporter of one of Chelsea’s bitter rivals. But I sincerely respect Mourinho.

Look at Mourinho’s Chelsea career record. While many make fun of him calling himself the ’special one’ I believe that might actually be the correct term to describe him based on his success at Chelsea FC. Chelsea is not Chelsea without him. Abramovich is making a big big big mistake. Apart from maybe Guus Hiddink, there’s almost nobody who’s available and good enough to fill Mourinho’s large shoes.

Jose Mourinho made the EPL fun to watch. I always enjoyed his comments, even those made negatively towards Liverpool. I don’t think there’s ever a manager that made such an impact on the EPL. He will be sorely missed…

Somehow deep down inside I still think it might be a publicity stunt and he’ll just pop back into the Chelsea fray haha ;)

Mourinho was the greatest manager Chelsea ever had or will ever have. He has done more for the tem than any manager in last 50 years. We need him back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think he should go to Spain and teach some manners and etiquette to many coaches theres, specially to Aragones, who is a real “big goat” as we say in Spanish!

I am a Basque Chelsea supporter and I have to say it´s a sad day for all the people who love this team; without Mourinho nothing of what has happened to this team would have been possible. We all should be extremely grateful to him for making us happy by winning two Premier Leagues and a Carling Cup. He´ll be successful whichever the team he joins, no doubt about it. The best of the luck!

I don’t know what he’s like as a person but as a football manager he had a few unpleasant habits, notably when he attempted to intimidate match officials. I’m not sorry he’s gone.

Chelsea will be in big shit without Jose. Jose did a
great job at Chelsea. Too bad Roman dont think that way. Oh well, he will be back for sure!
