Sun Valley schwag

July 12, 2006

DSC01881.JPGThe telcos weren’t in attendance this year so it was safe for eBay’s Meg Whitman to hand out free Skype phones from Philips. Each of the 200-or-so attendees picked one up on their way out of a morning session on business failures. CBS’s Les Moonves, News Corp.’s Rupert Murdoch and movie maker Harvey Weinstein were seen clutching their phones on their way to an afternoon rafting trip.

It’s been a while since I partook, but the last I checked, “schwag” referred to the cheapest, most disgusting grade of marijuana. So either the Philips Skype phone falls far short of our esteemed blogger’s expectations, or he’s been smoking “schwag” and actually meant to write “swag.”

I think Ken Li’s been based in New York City too long and has picked up a Yiddishism. The big question for me is when will the first of the swag items appear back on e-Bay?

Not that i’ve partaken, but the word’s usage has been practically the same where i come from. And Nic may be right about being in New York too long.

Out here in the West we call it swag — something we all get.
