Eureka, a mistake!

Posted by: The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly Editor
No housing woes in booming Washington state

In contrast, the foreclosure rate in nearby California, whose motto is the Golden State, surged to the second highest in the nation in August, according to a report released on Tuesday by RealtyTrac, a leading real estate data provider.

In the article, your reporter mentions that the motto of California is “the golden state”. That is not the state’s motto, but its nickname. The motto of California is, “Eureka!”.

U.S. assigns officials to clear Iraqi refugee logjam

But up to now, the United States has resettled only 990 Iraqis on American soil, a U.S. official said. That is less than 1 percent of more than 10,000 refugees allocated for admission to the United States by the U.N. High Commissioner on Refugees.

In your article “US assigns officials to clear Iraqi refugee logjam”, you state that 990 Iraqi refugees have been re-settled out of the allocated limit of 10,000. You then claim that this is less than 1%. You might want to check that arithmetic again — by my calculations, that would be 9.9%.

Working families?

Posted by: The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly Editor

obama-180.jpgObama proposes U.S. middle-class tax relief plan

Obama’s tax plan, set to be announced in a speech in Washington, includes a cut of up to $1,000 for working families, a mortgage interest credit for low- and middle-income homeowners and the elimination of income taxes for seniors making less than $50,000 per year

Your article talks about tax cuts for “working families.”  I work every day but the tax cuts will not apply to me, in fact I will probably get a tax increase from the Democrats. I am offended by the code words “working families.” It is time you used the correct term in your reporting. Why do you not do this?

Al

“Working families” isn’t a great description under the circumstances; we’re discussing a better one for future stories: GBU Editor

History of Taiwan

Posted by: The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly Editor
Thousands march in Taiwan ahead of doomed U.N. bid
China has seen self-ruled, democratic Taiwan as part of its territory rather than as a separate country since the island broke away from Mao Zedong’s Communists after civil war in 1949.

Taiwan has never been part of communist China. The KMT, known as the Nationalist Party back in 1949, fled from the Communists and took over the island of Taiwan. Please educate your reporters about Taiwan or have them check the facts before writing & publishing an article like this.

Johnson W.

The People’s Republic of China (as your reporter called it “communist China”) did not come into existence until 1949. As a simple matter of chronology, Taiwan could not have been a part of China in history.

Somebody once married to Reagan dies

Posted by: The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly Editor

wyman-180.jpgReagan’s first wife, actress Jane Wyman, dead

I can’t believe you put Ronald Reagan’s name first in your headline. The actress had a full career and won an Academy Award, yet you began with the name of a man who hadn’t been her husband for more than half a century, and who for that matter hasn’t been President for nearly 20 years.

Amazed

Several readers pointed this out. It was not a great headline. Reagan’s name shouldn’t have been before Wyman’s, and maybe not in the headline at all: GBU Editor

US sex offender laws do more harm than good-report

Stranger danger is not the norm, Fellner said about community fears of repeat attacks by sexual offenders. Government studies show that 90 percent of sexual attacks are committed by family members or trusted friends, he said.

There’s an article this evening that refers to HRW official Jamie Fellner as a “he”. But Jamie is a female.

All those zeros are the key…

Carmakers turn “green” but is it a smokescreen?

lamb-200.jpgFRANKFURT (Reuters) - What price exclusivity? If you ask Lamborghini, one million euros ($1.4 million) should do it — before tax, of course.

With the six-figure price tag, it is the most expensive car that it has ever built.

Regarding the Lamborghini article, $1,400,000 is a 7-figure price, not a 6-figure price. See, what you do is count the numbers. We have a 1, a 4 and 5 zeros. That’s 7 figures - not 6.

Tony D.

A number of readers noticed that. Presumably they were briefly elated at thinking they could afford a Lamborghini if it was only six figures. We corrected: GBU Editor

A-peel for better spelling

tangerine-180.jpgTangerine peel could help fight cancer

The findings may offer a new approach to uncovering a treatment for cancers such as breast, lung, prostrate and ovarian cancer, the scientists said.

The article would be far more believable if you could spell correctly. PROSTRATE cancer?

Unpopular description…

bush-140.jpgBush to address war-weary Americans on Iraq

SYDNEY, Sept 8 (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush will address a war-weary American public next week to “lay out a vision” for the U.S. role in Iraq as he tries to sell his strategy in the wake of a crucial report to Congress.

About your war-weary Americans. The only people I know of who could possibly be war-weary are those who are doing the actual fighting. If you’re comfortable ass is parked on a sofa watching a football game or in a mall shopping for you’re creature comforts then you are not WAR-WEARY. Get it.

Jim L.

Attention Reuters!! Americans such as myself who are very concerned about our country’s security are NOT “war-weary”. We are, however, weary of you telling us that we are.

D. M.

The choice of words in any article is very important. Let me tell you what “war-weary” means based on a history lesson: Civil War, World War I and II. In all of these wars, everyone in this country sacrificed lives, lack of basic needs, etc. to support a war effort. When it comes to Iraq War the only people who are sacrificing are the soldiers and their families. I do not think that qualifies as a “war-weary American public”.

Wayne Z.

This was a very unpopular phrase. A number of readers wrote in to tell us they felt “war weary” was not an accurate way to describe the general citizenry: GBU Editor
