Hugh Hefner: Rebel with a cause

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – At 84 years-old, Playboy founder Hugh Hefner embodies the lifestyle of sexual freedom that his men’s magazine has espoused since it was founded in 1953, featuring a nude centerfold of Marilyn Monroe.

Yet, there is another side to the pajama-loving man known around the world by his nickname, Hef. Along with sexual freedom, he has championed civil rights, published stories challenging McCarthyism and the Vietnam War, and backed gay causes and the legalization of marijuana.

Hey Mel (Gibbons), we got your picture right here!

Photo

Celebrity news website Radaronline.com on Friday dropped its latest bomb on Mel Gibson when it published a picture of a chip-toothed Oksana Grigorieva, who claims Gibson is responsible for her damaged front teeth. The two are locked in a bitter legal battle revolving around the custody of their daughter, and in the past week Radar has been publishing audio tapes of Gibson ranting at Grigorieva.

While the tapes sound like Gibson, there has been no formal confirmation it is him, and we can’t vouch for the authenticity of the photo, either. But they are all up on the Radar site, if you want to see. And whether authentic or not, they’ve helped turn up the heat on Mel.

New Orleans Saints march off with top Espys

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The NFL’s New Orleans Saints went marching in on Wednesday at the Espy Awards and walked away with the trophy for best sports team while quarterback Drew Brees was named best male athlete by fans of sports TV network ESPN.

Brees led the Saints, long considered among the worst teams in U.S. professional football, to a come-from-behind victory in the National Football League’s Super Bowl championship game. The triumphant season boosted the spirits of the city ravaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Hollywood apprenticeships? No Sorcerers here.

Nic Cage sold popcorn. Jerry Bruckheimer worked in a mail room, Alfred Molina in a morgue and Jay Baruchel screamed like a girl!!!

Disney movie “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” debuts on Friday telling of a modern-day, master sorcerer (Cage) named Balthazar Blake who recruits an apprentice named Dave (Baruchel) to help him battle his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath ( Molina). Disney asked the film’s stars and mega-producer Bruckheimer (the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies and “CSI” TV shows) what their first jobs were — if they ever were apprentices — and below is what they had to say. One hint: in each case, we can pretty much guarantee, it’s better to be a movie star!

Mel Gibson: We heard the tapes, too.

Photo

We heard the tapes, too. And they are not good. Mel Gibson (if, in fact, the voice on the tapes is his, and it sounds a lot like him) comes across angry, irrational, foul-mouthed and exhausted from ranting at his former girlfriend and the mother of his infant daughter.

If you don’t know what we’re talking about, in the past few months, the “Braveheart” Oscar winner has been caught up in a pitched legal battle over the failed relationship with his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, and has filed a restraining order against the other. But in the past two weeks, the publishing of audiotapes by celebrity website Radaronline.com has raised the stakes in the legal skirmishing and threatened to hurt Gibson’s career — maybe even ruin it. On the tapes, a voice said to be Gibson hurls expletives and racial slurs at a woman who is purportedly Grigorieva. You can read about the first tape with the racial slur here. A second tape was posted by Radaronline.com on Monday.

Gaga keeps her “little monsters” screaming, but what’s next?

Photo

Lady Gaga’s fans, whom she often refers to as her “little monsters,” were out in force this week in her hometown of New York City.  She enjoyed three sold out concerts and morning chat show “Today” said they had their largest crowd ever with up to 18,000 fans outside their Rockefeller Plaza studios for a performance on Friday morning.

On her second concert tour performing songs from two albums — “The Fame” and “The Fame Monster” — Gaga surely knows the money in music these days generally comes more from concert touring than album sales. On “Today,” she connected  directly to her fans, from the “freaks” to the “New York City gay kids,” telling them: “you can be whoever you want to be,  my little monsters.”

Lohan lawyer says jail time ‘unfair,’ then quits

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The attorney for Lindsay Lohan resigned on Thursday even as she issued a statement calling the jail sentence imposed on the troubled actress this week for violating probation, “harsh and unfair.”

A spokeswoman for attorney Shawn Chapman Holley confirmed the lawyer had left Lohan’s case, but she did not have any details on a reason why or who had replaced Holley.

Lindsay Lohan’s attorney calls jail time ‘unfair’

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The attorney for Lindsay Lohan on Thursday issued her first statement since the troubled actress was sentenced to jail earlier this week for violating probation, calling the judge’s ruling “harsh and unfair.”

Shawn Chapman Holley said she and the 24-year-old Lohan believe the term of 90 days in jail and 90 more days at an inpatient treatment clinic is “far harsher than what others would have received under similar circumstances.”

Update: Lindsay Lohan. Did judge see that finger?

Photo

(Note: Strong language in picture at bottom)

She said she was a changed woman. She pleaded for forgiveness. She cried before a judge. But on her middle finger nail she had painted an expletive. Was it a message to the judge? To the prosecutor? To the media? Regardless, when the gavel came down in the courtroom of Beverly Hills Superior Court Judge Marsha Revel, Lindsay Lohan was headed for jail.

The “Mean Girls” actress on Tuesday was sentenced to 90 days in jail — three 30-day terms, served consecutively — for each of two drunken driving charges and one reckless driving charge. (Read the story here) .
