The truth of the matter is, for-profit or state run, it doesn’t matter. If we were to put state run schools under the same scrutiny as for-profit schools, I’d be willing to wager that the percentage of defaulted students and unemployed students would be comparable. Are there dirty for profit schools out there? Of course! But, the minority does not define the full industry.

Full disclosure: I’m a graduate of a state run university who now works for a for-profit school.

More regulations are not necessary if present ones are enforced, which means more staff to enforce them. There have been too many cutback already in this sector of government because student loans has never been a priority for the past 3 administrations. Part of the solution is to increase enforement employment levels to the 1997 levels and the high quality students will not be forced to default on their loans.
