Pensions report to suggest further public sector squeeze

LONDON (Reuters) – Public sector workers will have to pay more into their pensions or get less and perhaps even do both, is the likely conclusion of a government-commissioned report to be published on Thursday.

Struggling with a record budget deficit and a mounting public sector pensions bill, the Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition government is desperate to bring costs down and tasked former Labour cabinet minister John Hutton to come up with a solution to a problem that many say is a ticking time bomb.

John Laing not seeking London listing-CEO

LONDON, Oct 4 (Reuters) – British construction company John
Laing is not seeking a flotation, its chief executive told
Reuters on Monday, denying a report it was eyeing a 600 million
pounds ($948 million) London Stock Exchange listing by end-2010.

“The company is not being floated, I can tell you
categorically,” Adrian Ewer said, after describing the report in
Britain’s Independent on Sunday newspaper as “total rubbish”.

RCM moves into paper, backs pharma amid uncertainty

LONDON (Reuters) – Paper makers, drugs stocks and utilities hold the key to generating dividend income in times of lacklustre prospects for economic growth, said the chief investment officer for Europe at Allianz equity fund unit RCM.

Neil Dwane, manager of the RCM European Equity Income Fund, believed insurers too will see the fund through what he predicted will be a long period of uncertainty.

Aberdeen inflows accelerate as clients buy equities

LONDON, Sept 27 (Reuters) – Fund firm Aberdeen Asset
Management (ADN.L: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) said inflows accelerated over the summer,
with clients favouring equity funds despite volatile markets
which have made investors cautious.

The firm reported on Monday a net 621 million pounds ($973.2
million) of new inflows during July and August, above the 337
million pounds in the previous three months.

UK public pension costs

LONDON, Sept 15 (Reuters) – Facing the largest public
pension deficit for generations, the British government has
appointed former cabinet minister John Hutton to lead a review
of public retirement provision.

The four largest state pension funds — the health service,
teachers, the civil service, and armed forces — had obligations
of 780 billion pounds ($1.2 trillion) at the end of March.

Henderson dumped by adviser over infra fund

LONDON (Reuters) – Asset manager Henderson has been dropped by at least one major UK pension consultant following a row over its treatment of investors in an infrastructure fund, a document obtained by Reuters shows.

The document showed that the consultant, one of a handful of firms that wield significant influence over who wins business from institutions such as pension funds, had decided to stop putting Henderson (HGGH.L: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) forward for new business in response to the dispute over management of the Henderson PFI Secondary Fund II.
