Aussie, kiwi gain as rate hopes hot up

TOKYO, Dec 10 (Reuters) – The Australian and New Zealand
dollars gained on the dollar and yen on Thursday after Australian
jobs data fuelled higher interest rate expectations and New
Zealand signalled rates there may go up sooner than thought.

The Australian dollar bounced up 1 percent on the dollar and
more than 1 percent on the yen after Australian employment beat
forecasts in November and stoked expectations for an interest
rate increase in February. [ID:nSYD46868]

Aussie, kiwi gain vs dollar, yen as rate hopes hot up

TOKYO (Reuters) – The Australian and New Zealand dollars led a recovery against the dollar and yen on Thursday after Australian jobs data fueled interest rate expectations and New Zealand signaled rates there may go up sooner than thought.

Traders said short positions in the higher yielding currencies had built up in the past few days as the market grew nervous about sovereign debt risks, and investors quickly bought them back after the data and New Zealand central bank comments.

Dollar holds ground; yen soft as stocks up

TOKYO, Dec 2 (Reuters) – The yen was on the back foot against
higher-yielding currencies as rising stocks and commodity markets
encouraged a pick-up in risk-taking on Wednesday, while the
dollar broadly held its ground.

Traders and analysts in Japan were still chewing over steps
by the central bank the previous day to attack deflationary
pressures, which left many disappointed, and were keen to hear
the outcome of a meeting between Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama
and Bank of Japan Governor Masaaki Shirakawa expected later.

Traders and analysts in Japan were still chewing over steps by the central bank the previous day to attack deflationary pressures, which left many disappointed, and were keen to hear the outcome of a meeting between Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama and Bank of Japan Governor Masaaki Shirakawa due late in the day.

Dollar at 7-wk low on yen, Aussie pushes higher

TOKYO, Nov 25 (Reuters) – The dollar ground to its lowest in
seven weeks against the yen on Wednesday while the Australian
dollar rose after a central banker and upbeat construction data
supported expectations of a rate rise.

Reserve Bank of Australia Deputy Governor Ric Battellino said
the economy had entered a new growth phase that would last for
years, helping push the Australian dollar above $0.9200 <AUD=D4>
and gain on the yen on speculation of the third interest rate
hike in a row in December. [ID:nSYD514867]

Dollar, yen gain as investors take risk off table

TOKYO, Nov 19 (Reuters) – The dollar and the yen rose on
Thursday as investors, watching soft equities performances and
capital controls in emerging markets, closed out positions in
riskier currencies and bought back the two low-yielders.

The higher yielding New Zealand and Australian dollars, which
have been favoured plays against both the dollar and yen this
year, both fell, dropping 1 percent against the yen, while the
euro retraced a chunk of its gains made the previous day against
the dollar.

Dollar steady after slip, processes Fed rate comment

TOKYO, Nov 19 (Reuters) – The dollar hovered near the year’s
lows against a basket of currencies on Thursday after slipping
the previous day as economic indicators and a Fed official
reinforced the view that U.S. rate hikes are still distant.

St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank President James Bullard said
the Fed may start tightening financial conditions by selling
assets it has accumulated rather than raising interest rates.

Dollar drifts down, euro up as yuan speculation ebbs

TOKYO, Nov 16 (Reuters) – The dollar drifted lower on Monday
and the euro edged up as rhetoric over China’s yuan currency
policy increased, although market speculation of any near-term
yuan appreciation receded.

The United States and China sparred over exchange rates at
a meeting of Asia Pacific leaders on Sunday, a move that
quashed expectations that China may allow the yuan scope to rise
in coordination with U.S. President Barack Obama’s first trip to
Beijing. [ID:nSP43459] [nOBAMAASIA]

Dollar holds near 1-mth high before Fed, Aussie trips

TOKYO, Nov 4 (Reuters) – The dollar steadied below a
one-month high against a basket of currencies as investors
awaited a Fed statement later on Wednesday, while the Australian
dollar eased after weaker-than-expected retail sales data dimmed
prospects for a December rate hike, taking others down with it.

The main focus of the day is the Federal Reserve’s statement
at the end of its two-day meeting, and whether U.S. central bank
might drop or alter its pledge to keep rates low for an “extended
period”. [nFEDAHEAD].
