Tribeca expands world view in film fest lineup

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Films about the treatment of women in India and a gay man in Israel will open the competitions at the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival among a range of foreign stories and dozens of movies starring James Franco, Abbie Cornish, Kate Bosworth and others.

Ninety feature films, many from around the world, will screen at Tribeca, one of the largest film festivals in the United States that showcases independent cinema and was co-founded by actor Robert De Niro. It runs from April 18 to April 29.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – There is one thing the new HBO movie “Game Change” won’t alter after it airs on television in one week: Sarah Palin still will be loved by many Republican conservatives and loathed by liberal Democrats.

In the controversial new TV movie that aims at a behind-the-scenes portrait of the former U.S. vice presidential candidate, Julianne Moore portrays Sarah Palin as a devoted Republican who lacks basic knowledge of world affairs and careens out of control.

“Harry Potter” author JK Rowling writing adult novel

NEW YORK (Reuters) – J.K. Rowling, whose “Harry Potter” fantasy book series became a global publishing phenomenon, is writing her first novel for adults but the title and plot are still a closely-guarded secret.

The British writer, 46, whose teenage boy wizard tales became international best-sellers and inspired a series of hit films, said on Thursday that her new novel would be “very different” to the “Harry Potter” books that made her a household name and turned her into a billionaire.

Stars mourn Whitney Houston at rousing New Jersey funeral

NEWARK, New Jersey (Reuters) – Stars, family and friends mourned Whitney Houston in a spirited Baptist funeral service at her hometown church on Saturday, a week after the death of the singer whose spectacular voice made her one of the biggest pop stars of her era.

Gospel and soul music greats, celebrities and family members swayed to gospel hits and delivered tributes both sung and spoken to the crowded New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, where Houston honed her wide vocal range as a young choral singer with her mother Cissy Houston, a backup singer for Aretha Franklin.

Houston on Saturday, one week after the sudden death of the
singer whose spectacular voice and best-selling albums made her

Houston, who died in a Beverly Hills hotel room last week,
recorded stirring love songs and vibrant, dance tunes during a
30-year career that peaked with her 1992 signature hit “I Will
Always Love You.” She was due to be honored by family and
friends at a funeral service in her native Newark, New Jersey.

will sing and speak at pop star Whitney Houston’s funeral, from
Alicia Keys and Kevin Costner to the soul and gospel music
royalty from which she hails, including her cousin Dionne
Warwick and Aretha Franklin.

Houston will be laid to rest on Saturday after an
invitation-only memorial service at the New Hope Baptist Church
in Newark, New Jersey, where Houston groomed her voice singing
in the church choir with her mother Cissy Houston, a soul and
gospel singer who once backed up Franklin.

Stars line up to perform at Whitney Houston’s funeral

NEW YORK, Feb 17 (Reuters) – Alicia Keys and actor
Kevin Costner will take part in the funeral of Whitney Houston
along with the pop star’s godmother Aretha Franklin, her cousin
Dionne Warwick and singer Stevie Wonder, her family spokeswoman
said.

Houston will be laid to rest on Saturday after the noon
(1700 GMT) service at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New
Jersey, where she performed while growing up.

Burgundy, jade, rich fabrics, set trends on NY’s runways

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Shades of burgundy and jade, rich fabrics and sophisticated skirts and dresses with longer hemlines inspired by designs of the 1960s and early ’70s were among the trends at New York Fashion Week which wrapped up on Thursday.

More than 90 designers showed Fall/Winter 2012 collections to retail buyers, media and celebrities during semi-annual event and 250 others opted for other venues around the city.
