Paats-W,

Unfortunately, that won't work here in the United States of Amassing. We don't want to sully our collective conscience with working conditions of those who make our toys, we just want them cheap.

I can start a company that makes everything here in the States from parts made here in the states and I would go broke because I couldn't afford to sell the widgets as cheaply as Chinese imports would go for. It comes down to simple math.

if you organise 8 hours shifts to produce Apple toys, you will employ more people and treat them like humans; the massive pile of cash stored by Apple looks now obviously like belonging to the poor damned chinese workers; just do not outsource to any working condition not acceptable to yourself; and the intermediaries who abuse the workers and the trust of good faith customers are not worth their political or business jobs; they need to resign and start from fresh, joining the Chinese queue at Apple's door.

Jesus, you make it sound like Apple invented the lightbulb! All they did was take what everyone else was doing and make it look better and smoother - and now we learn they did this at the hands of slave labour. I've never liked Apple products and now that the cult-leader has past all the mindless followers are starting to question as well. 'Bout. Frickin. Time.

So far China has been ruthless in its suppression of democracy. And I think it's true that China is exporting its dictatorial attitudes to the US or at least to the corporations that do business with them. It may not be long before a Chinese style communism invades the US. We have already lost our belief that all are created equal under the law. Now we believe that those who are wealthy deserve special treatment which is in some ways similar to the governing elite's control in China.

Odd that we cast stones at China when here democracy is being eroded. In particular the ability of large corporations to manipulate elections via unlimited advertising, lobbying, and political donations etc. is destroying democracy.
