CDC urges measles vaccinations amid Disneyland outbreak

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urged Americans on Thursday to get vaccinated for measles amid an outbreak that began at Disneyland in December, saying that 2014 saw the highest number of cases in two decades.

So far more than 90 people have been diagnosed with measles in California and elsewhere, most of them linked to an outbreak that public health officials suspect began when an infected person from outside the United States visited Disneyland in Anaheim between Dec. 15 and Dec. 20.

Mr Incredible convicted of attacking Batgirl on Hollywood Boulevard

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – A man who dresses as the comic superhero Mr. Incredible has been sentenced to 3 years probation after pleading guilty to attacking a woman costumed as Batgirl in a Hollywood Boulevard turf dispute, prosecutors said on Tuesday.

Muhammet Bilik, 35, was also ordered to attend anger management therapy, perform 20 days of roadside cleanup and stay away from the so-called Hollywood Entertainment District where the spat erupted.

Six more measles cases reported in California after Disneyland outbreak

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Six more cases of measles have been confirmed in California following an outbreak at Disneyland that began in December, public health officials said on Monday, raising to 74 the total number of people in the state who have been infected.

Previously, 68 people in California had been confirmed to have the measles, along with 14 others elsewhere: five in Arizona, three in Utah, two in Washington state, one each in Oregon, Colorado and Nevada, and one in Mexico.

Doctors group urges measles shots as Disneyland outbreak spreads

LOS ANGELES, Jan 23 (Reuters) – The leading U.S.
pediatrician group on Friday urged parents, schools and
communities to vaccinate children against measles in the face of
an outbreak that began at Disneyland in California in December
and has spread to more than 80 people in seven states and
Mexico.

The American Academy of Pediatrics said all children should
get the vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella between 12 and 15
months of age and again between 4 and 6 years old.

Disneyland seeks to reassure public amid measles outbreak

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Disneyland sought on Thursday to reassure visitors that the theme park was safe amid a measles outbreak that began there in December and prompted state health officials to urge parents not to bring their unvaccinated children.

The California Department of Public Health reported 59 confirmed measles cases among state residents since the end of December, most linked to an initial exposure at Disneyland or the adjacent Disney California Adventure Park.

Disneyland measles outbreak prompts warning at high school

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Health officials are warning parents that a student at a Southern California high school has become infected with measles from an outbreak traced to Disneyland in December, urging them to contact a doctor if their child develops symptoms.

The Orange County Health Care Agency said it had been contacting individuals who may have come in contact with the infected student from Huntington Beach High School.

Archaeologists find 1882 rifle leaning against Nevada desert tree

(Reuters) – Archaeologists conducting a survey in Great Basin National Park in eastern Nevada have stumbled upon a 132-year-old Winchester rifle propped against a tree, possibly having been left there more than a century ago.

The rifle, which records show was manufactured and shipped by the gun maker in 1882, had been leaning against the Juniper tree for so long that the wood of its stock was cracked and deteriorated from the desert sun, its barrel rusted.

Yosemite climbers reach top of El Capitan in historic ascent

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Two climbers completed a historic 19-day ascent to the summit of Yosemite National Park’s El Capitan in California on Wednesday after scaling the rock formation’s 3,000-foot (900-metre) sheer granite face without climbing tools, a spokeswoman said.

Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson made it to the top of El Capitan at 3:30 p.m. (2330 GMT), spokeswoman Jess Clayton said in an email. They were the first to climb El Capitan’s so-called Dawn Wall without bolts or climbing tools, she said.

Yosemite climbers make final push to top of El Capitan

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Two climbers trying to scale a sheer granite face of the 3,000-foot (900-metre) El Capitan rock formation in Yosemite National Park without climbing tools made a final push toward the summit on Wednesday, hoping to reach the top by late afternoon.

Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson were making “great progress” as they sought to become first to climb El Capitan’s so-called Dawn Wall without bolts or climbing tools, spokeswoman Jess Clayton said.
