LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Detectives are investigating the disappearance of a Hollywood studio executive as a homicide 10 months after he vanished under suspicious circumstances, and are seeking the public’s help in solving the high-profile case, authorities said on Thursday.
Gavin Smith, a 57-year-old film distribution executive for 20th Century Fox, was last seen on the night of May 1, 2012, driving in his black Mercedes Benz away from a friend’s house in the community of Oak Park, northwest of Los Angeles.
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The Los Angeles Unified School District has agreed to a multimillion-dollar settlement with 58 current and former students at a school where an ex-teacher was accused of taking bondage-style photos of pupils, a lawyer for the district said on Tuesday.
The settlement would resolve nearly half of the 129 claims filed by former students of Miramonte Elementary School, attorney David Holmquist said.
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Prosecutors in California charged three former members of a now-closed Fresno State fraternity on Tuesday with misdemeanor hazing in connection with the death last year of a pledge who died of alcohol intoxication during initiation.
Leonard Louis Serrato, 28, Aaron Joseph Raymo, 24, and Daniel Woodard Baker, 22, were charged with one count each of hazing and providing alcohol to a person under the age of 21. They face a possible sentence of six months to a year in jail and $5,000 fine if convicted at trial.
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – California Governor Jerry Brown denied parole on Friday for a member of the Manson Family cult who was sentenced to life in prison for two murders in the 1970s, saying that he remained a danger to the public.
In rejecting parole for Bruce Davis, who is now 70, Brown reversed the decision of a state parole board that had found him eligible for release after his 27th parole hearing last October.
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – A man accused of gunning down an aspiring rapper as he drove on the Las Vegas Strip last week, touching off a fiery car crash that also killed two other people, was arrested in Los Angeles on Thursday after an exhaustive multi-state manhunt.
Ammar Harris, 26, surrendered at an apartment in the North Hollywood section of Los Angeles after it was surrounded by members of a joint Los Angeles police and FBI task force, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Lieutenant Ray Steiber said.
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – A man accused of gunning down an aspiring rapper killed as he drove his Maserati on the Las Vegas Strip last week has been arrested in Southern California, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman said on Thursday.
Kenneth Wayne Cherry Jr., 27, was fatally wounded in the shooting, and his silver Maserati veered into a taxicab, killing the driver and his passenger when it exploded into flames. Cherry performed under the name “Kenny Clutch.”

(Reuters) – Police identified a 22-year-old woman on Tuesday as a “person of interest” in the slaying of an aspiring rapper who was shot and killed while driving his Maserati on the Las Vegas strip and for the deaths of two more people in a fiery crash that followed.
Las Vegas police said Tineesha Lashun Howard was riding in a black Range Rover with prime suspect Ammar Harris when he opened fire early on the Maserati being driven by 27-year-old Kenneth Wayne Cherry Jr. before dawn on Thursday.
