Trayvon lawyers want U.S. to review prosecutor’s role

SANFORD, Florida (Reuters) – Attorneys for the family of slain black teenager Trayvon Martin are asking the U.S. Justice Department to review reports that prosecutors undermined a police investigation of shooter George Zimmerman by overruling a detective who wanted to charge him.

The Justice Department’s civil rights division had already agreed to review the local Florida investigation into the racially charged case that has riveted the country. Waves of demonstrations have called for Zimmerman’s arrest.

Public information restricted in case of slain U.S. teen

SANFORD, Florida (Reuters) – A special prosecutor investigating the death of an unarmed black teenager in Florida invoked an exemption on Thursday that allows authorities to deny the release of otherwise public information to the media.

The national media has converged on this Orlando suburb to cover a story that has gripped the country and renewed a discussion about race relations in America. Despite this, public officials have told reporters not to bother asking questions.

Shooter of Florida teen appears uninjured in video

SANFORD, Florida (Reuters) – The neighborhood watch volunteer who shot dead an unarmed black teenager in Florida appeared uninjured when he was brought into the police station on the night of the shooting, according to a video released by ABC News on Wednesday.

George Zimmerman told police he shot Trayvon Martin inside a gated community on February 26 in self-defense after Martin attacked him and repeatedly bashed his head into a concrete walkway.

Shooter of Florida teen did not appear injured: video

SANFORD, Florida (Reuters) – The neighborhood watch captain who shot dead unarmed Florida teenager Trayvon Martin had no apparent injuries when he was brought into the police station on the night of the shooting, according to a video released by ABC News on Wednesday.

George Zimmerman, who is half white and half Hispanic, told police he shot the black teen inside a gated community on February 26 in self-defense after Martin attacked him, repeatedly bashing his head into a concrete walkway. Police at the scene said the 28-year-old shooter was bleeding from the nose and the back of head.

Man who shot Florida teen fears for safety, supporters say

SANFORD, Florida (Reuters) – The neighborhood watch volunteer who sparked a national uproar by shooting an unarmed teenager to death has wept with remorse over the killing and now fears for his own life, a friend of the gunman and a legal adviser said on Sunday.

Supporters of the boy and his family staged more protest rallies and prayer vigils across the country, many dressed in “hoodies,” or hooded sweatshirts, like the one Trayvon Martin, 17, was wearing when he was gunned down last month.

Friends fear for safety of man who shot Florida teen

SANFORD, Florida (Reuters) – Friends and supporters spoke out on Sunday on behalf of the neighborhood watch volunteer who shot and killed an unarmed teenager in Florida, saying he fears for his safety after receiving death threats.

George Zimmerman, who has claimed he shot Trayvon Martin on February 26 in self-defense, is staying at an undisclosed location after widely circulated death threats and word of a $10,000 bounty to find him, said legal adviser Craig Sonner, who said he would represent Zimmerman if charges are filed.

SANFORD, Florida (Reuters) – George Zimmerman cried for days in remorse after shooting dead a black Florida teenager, a family friend of Zimmerman said on Sunday, offering a sympathetic portrayal of the man at the focal point of a national uproar.

Zimmerman, 28, a white Hispanic, shot Trayvon Martin, 17, in what he said was self defense during an altercation in the gated community Zimmerman was watching on February 26 in Sanford, Florida. After barely going noticed for weeks, the case has since galvanized the country and renewed a national discussion about race.

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Florida (Reuters) – The lawyer representing the man who shot dead a black Florida teenager said the public image of his client is almost completely wrong and that he acted out of self-defense, not racial bigotry.

Craig Sonner, a previously little known defense lawyer from Altamonte Springs, Florida, suddenly finds himself thrust into the spotlight as the attorney representing Zimmerman, who remains free and uncharged over the incident in the town of Sanford, just north of Orlando.

Obama gets personal over killing of black Florida teenager

WASHINGTON/SANFORD, Florida (Reuters) – President Barack Obama weighed into the controversial killing of a black teenager in Florida in very personal terms on Friday, comparing the boy to a son he doesn’t have and calling for American “soul searching” over how the incident occurred.

Seventeen-year-old Trayvon Martin, dressed in a “hoodie” sweatshirt, was shot dead a month ago in Sanford, Florida by a 28-year-old white Hispanic neighborhood watch volunteer who said he was acting in self-defense.

Police chief in “Stand Your Ground” killing steps down

SANFORD, Florida (Reuters) – A local police chief and a Florida state prosecutor overseeing the case of an unarmed black teenager shot dead by a neighbourhood watch captain stepped aside on Thursday following withering criticism and national outrage that police have declined to arrest the shooter.

Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee’s resignation – which he called “temporary” – failed to appease civil rights and community leaders who are calling for the arrest of watch captain George Zimmerman, 28, who shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin and claimed self-defence.
