U.S. acknowledges mistaken attack on Afghan civilians

KABUL (Reuters) – The U.S. military acknowledged on Saturday killing 23 civilians and wounding 12 others earlier this year after mistaking them for a convoy of Taliban insurgents.

The U.S. report into the incident, which happened in Uruzgan, said the crew of a remote-controlled drone aircraft had “provided inaccurate reporting” ahead of the incident and local command posts “failed to properly analyze the situation”.

New British ministers in Afghanistan on flying visit

KABUL (Reuters) – Ministers from Britain’s new coalition government were in Afghanistan on Saturday for talks with President Hamid Karzai and other officials on what is likely to be London’s biggest foreign policy issue for years to come.

Foreign Secretary William Hague, Defense Secretary Liam Fox and International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell will meet Karzai and some of his ministers, visit British troops and also see a British-funded development project, officials said.

Despite the seriousness with which the world takes North Korea’s missile and nuclear tests, the isolated country remains a rich source of humour for cartoonists, satirists and comedians around the world.

 

The diminutive, bouffant-haired leader, Kim Jong-il, has already been the star of a satirical full length cartoon, plaintively singing “I’m so ronery” in Team America, while plotting to blow up the world.
