Mr.Rhode wrote an excellent article with deep understanding of Egypt and its role in the Middle East. History will prove Mr. Rhode to be right because anyone who looks at the past of Egypt as a harbinger to the future will be surprised. These revolting Egyptian youth are smart, courageous, and determined and Egypt's SCAF is underestimating them because they know that the Muslem brotherhood will provide them with the legitimate numbers to maintain their hold on power.
If violence escalates in the next few weeks, as many anticipate (including myself), the more junior echelons of Egypt's army might revolt against its SCAF and the power balance in Egypt might be turned upside down.
Good job Mr. Rhode

Protestors who demand elections be delayed are very likely the same who demanded they be speeded up - months back.

Sorry, guys, but I can't help but feel the core motivator is that they've surveyed the feelings of the masses of voters getting to choose and their own political parties don't stand to win control.

That ain't the way democracy works except maybe in Ohio and Florida. :-]

It is easy to pin the blame on America, but is it that simple? Since when did anyone in the Arab world take notice of anything that Washington said? The writer of this opinion story may not recall the ousting of King Farouq, the overthrow of "revolution" leader Nagup (a "military type", by other scuzzy officers, led by the Charismatic Gamal Abdul naser and his clique, many admirers of Adolf Hitler, Saadat, Marshal Ammer, and a whole generation of offciers that successfully lost 4 wars to Israel. It is in the DNA of the Arab world to go fo a strong man, so they had a thief like Ghadaffi, a dictator like Mubarak, a cruel Saadam Hussein, a kniwing Saleh in Yemen and Hafez El Assad, also a miliatry type who participated in two lost wars to Israel. All are military men. Tantawi, who was the least competent of Mubarak team of losers, a grey officer who survived the assault on the Bar lev line, was elevated to his rank not because of his talent, but because he was servile, obedient and no threatening. He simply wants to keep his thieving buddies in power, so that the stealing can continue. they cannot afford anoher war with israel, they want more American money and cannot imagine a future in which they will have to make an honest living, competeing in the open market. Nohing more complicated. The looting of Egypt must go on! Do not blame the States, if they want to stop stealing, the U.S cannot stop them from resigining.

I'm impressed with this article. So there is hope for fair journalism. I fully agree with the content and conclusion, the way forward is for us in the West to be open, democratic and show trust for people in that area that they can govern themselves.
