SAN FRANCISCO, March 21 (Reuters) – The U.S. government is
expanding a cybersecurity program that scans Internet traffic
headed into and out of defense contractors to include far more
of the country’s private, civilian-run infrastructure.
As a result, more private sector employees than ever before,
including those at big banks, utilities and key transportation
companies, will have their emails and Web surfing scanned as a
precaution against cyber attacks.

Critics wave knives and hockey stick at U.S. air safety hearing
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The top U.S. transportation security official on Thursday defended his controversial move to allow small knives to be carried onto airplanes, despite protests from flight attendants and lawmakers who say it will endanger the flying public.
Sitting stonily at the witness table as members of the U.S. House of Representatives Homeland Security committee waved knives, a golf club and a hockey stick for dramatic emphasis, Transportation Security Administration head John Pistole told a hearing that his decision was made based on threat information and he had no plans to rescind it.
US Senate hearing spotlights ongoing discord over cybersecurity bill
WASHINGTON, March 7 (Reuters) – As the White House and
congressional lawmakers resume talks on legislation to improve
U.S. defenses against cyber-attacks, Homeland Security Secretary
Janet Napolitano on Thursday signaled that disagreements remain
over a House cybersecurity bill, which she called insufficient.
In 2012, identical legislation died in the House of
Representatives after President Barack Obama threatened to veto
it, saying the bill did not have adequate safeguards for privacy
and confidentiality, among other things.
