ATHENS (Reuters) – Support for Greece’s two pro-bailout parties has sunk to an all-time low, but pollsters predict the squabbling rivals will still scrape through upcoming elections with enough seats in parliament to push through the reforms demanded by lenders.
With Greece finally clinching a 130-billion-euro rescue package to avert a messy default, attention is slowly shifting to elections due in April – with financial markets and European partners nervously waiting to see whether a new government will swallow the bitter austerity pill prescribed in return for aid.
ATHENS, Jan 27 (Reuters) – Greece expects to clinch a
long-awaited bond swap deal within days, Prime Minister Lucas
Papademos told Reuters on Friday, promising the country would
avoid an unruly default feared by financial markets worldwide.

even with a deal, a report showed that the European Union and
IMF want Greece to push through more budget cuts and austerity
reforms before they sign off on a new bailout package.
MADRID/ATHENS (Reuters) – The embattled euro zone cleared a major funding test on Thursday when Spain romped through a key bond sale, while signs pointed to only a mild recession for the 17-nation bloc.
Talks between Greece and its creditors remained deadlocked, however, threatening to derail a needed bailout and keep the region’s all-consuming debt crisis on the boil.
ATHENS (Reuters) – Nikos Lekkas’ team of tax investigators knew they were on to something when they found that a humble Greek farmer on the island of Thasos owned a red Ferrari and a Porsche.
Intrigued by how a farmer who had declared just 100,000 euros in income over the past decade could afford such luxuries, Lekkas dispatched an undercover tax agent to the north Aegean island.

NAPLES, Italy (Reuters) – In the busy Naples square where she works, 18-year-old Arianna is a familiar sight as she darts back and forth from a cafe bearing trays with espresso and pastries.
With a bright blue apron, lip stud and cheerful smile, she is known to all except the Italian taxman — for whom the Neapolitan waitress has never existed and probably never will.
ATHENS (Reuters) – Greece has one last chance to stay in the euro zone and needs an all-out effort to avoid being dragged back several decades, the country’s central bank warned on Wednesday.
In a blunt snapshot of the country’s precarious position, the Bank of Greece said failure to hit fiscal targets, delays in implementing reforms and a shrinking economy had undermined its earlier assessments on Greece’s debt being sustainable.
