Comments on: Obama and Xi’s weekend getaway A clear-eyed view from Zachary Karabell Thu, 06 Feb 2014 10:10:54 +0000 hourly 1 By: nkirv Sun, 09 Jun 2013 12:39:45 +0000 Re U.S.-China cooperation: Could Obama please start by getting rid of the stupid xenophobic riders that Congressman Frank Wolf slips into the federal budget, in which NASA scientists are forbidden from collaborative research with Chinese scientists, and forbidden now to buy computers made in China (ahem, then WHERE do we buy a computer?). Meanwhile, our military is just fine with interacting with theirs. I’m an environmental scientist who studies global carbon cycling, which knows no political bounds. If I am to do my research thoroughly, I need to be able to obtain data from Chinese scientists who are taking measurements over the ecosystems in their country. There is nothing of a security nature in my work, but it’s all openly publishable and should be shared internationally. We have a few Chinese postdocs doing atmospheric modeling, which hardly is a security threat, and we had to move them out to a non-government building. This just hurts us, makes life inconvenient, creates waste of time, hampers progress. Please get rid of Frank Wolf’s stupid riders. Especially China and the U.S. need to cooperate on environmental issues and research.
