Speck of land nearest North Pole

dubbed Stray Dog WestThis patch of rock off northern Greenland hardly looks like a potential new front in a geopolitical tussle but have a look at Astrid Wendlandt’s fascinating story to find out why it might be.

The discoverer of the island, Dennis Schmitt, says it seems the world’s most northerly land – about 40 metres long.

Countries in the Arctic are trying to map out their seabed rights after Russia planted a flag on the seabed beneath the North Pole this year.

So maybe this new island will slightly advance Denmark’s claim to the Pole? Tell us what you think.
