Straight to the North Pole, via Cape Town?

Sign outside Troll Station in AntarcticaThis may be the only signpost in the world showing that the route to the North Pole takes you via Cape Town in South Africa.

Standing outside the Norwegian Troll research station in Antarctica, about 250 km (155 miles) from the coast at a latitude 72 degrees south, it makes most visitors feel disorientated by distances and directions.

At the top it points left to ”sydpolen” and right to “nordpolen” the Norwegian words for South Pole and North Pole.

In the direction of the North Pole it shows that Tromsoe, a city in the Arctic in Norway, is 15,791 km away and that Cape Town, South Africa, is 4,331 km towards the north.

Below that it has other points in Antarctica, such as research bases at Novo and Aboa-Wasa.

These are relatively nearby, just 350 km and 557 km respectively on an icy continent that is 1.5 times the size of the United States and has a population of about 4,000.

One comment so far

usually these signpost also show the time in walking hours, so:

tromsoe 15.791 km, 3.948 hours (:
