Soccer-Boatengs put brotherly love on hold again

SANTO ANDRE, Brazil, June 19 (Reuters) – Kevin-Prince Boateng and half-brother Jerome grew up in the tough Berlin district of Wedding, learning about the subtleties of soccer and the inequalities of life in tiny caged-in cement playgrounds the size of an inner city basketball court.

The Boateng boys have come a long way from that under-privileged, run-down high-rise section of Berlin and will once again be applying those life lessons learned on the biggest stage at the World Cup on Saturday.

Mertesacker set for 100th Germany cap defying critics

SANTO ANDRE Brazil (Reuters) – Per Mertesacker said he never dreamed he would even come close to getting 100 caps for Germany, which he will mark on Saturday, and went out of his way on Thursday to praise former coach Juergen Klinsmann for shaking up the ‘Nationalelf’ a decade ago.

The towering Mertesacker, one of the cleanest defenders in the game who only rarely gets booked, said he was also proud that he managed to defy the many naysayers who thought his international career should have ended six years ago.

Kroos no longer going AWOL for Germany in big games

SANTO ANDRE Brazil (Reuters) – Toni Kroos has been billed as the most promising midfielder of his generation for year years but the 24-year-old had the unfortunate habit of disappearing in Germany’s biggest matches before he turned in a brilliant performance against Portugal.

With two assists and an eye-popping 96 percent accuracy rating with 76 of his 79 passes on target in the 4-0 win on Monday, the midfielder was at the heart of Germany’s attack and had arguably the best of his 45 matches for the national side.

Injured Hummels may miss Ghana match, Germany says

SANTO ANDRE Brazil (Reuters) – Defender Mat Hummels may miss Germany’s next World Cup match against Ghana on Saturday after suffering a thigh injury in the team’s opening match, the German FA (DFB) said on Tuesday.

“Hummels suffered a contusion in his right thigh with bleeding into the muscle,” the DFB said in a statement on its website (www.dfb.de) after the results of a magnetic resonance imaging testing in a local hospital were announced. “It will depend on the further healing when he will be able to resume training or whether he can plan in the second Group G match against Ghana in Fortaleza on Saturday,” the DFB said.
