EU says further progress made in Ukraine-Russia gas row

BERLIN, May 26 (Reuters) – Europe’s Energy Commissioner said
on Monday Ukraine and Russia had made further progress in a
dispute over gas prices and his proposal that Ukraine to pay $2
billion of back debt by Thursday could pave the way for further
talks on Friday.

Speaking after three-way talks with Russia’s and Ukraine’s
energy ministers, Guenther Oettinger said the two governments
would study his proposal that Ukraine pay Russia $2 billion by
Thursday and a further $500 million by June 7.

Tax cheat Hoeness wants different jail due security fears: report

BERLIN (Reuters) – Former Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness, convicted in March of evading $40 million in taxes, has filed a formal protest about his jail due to security and privacy fears, a German magazine reported on Monday.

Hoeness’s lawyers filed an objection to Bavarian state plans to send the 62-year-old to the Landsberg prison because 157 reporters were allowed to tour the 114-year-old facility shortly after his conviction, Focus magazine reported.

Juncker says Merkel assured him of Commission presidency if EPP wins

BERLIN (Reuters) – Jean-Claude Juncker said on Sunday he had won assurances from German Chancellor Angela Merkel that he would become the next European Commission president if their centre-right bloc wins the European parliamentary elections on May 22-25.

Juncker’s comments, made in an interview with Bild am Sonntag newspaper, contrasted with Merkel’s own suggestion on Saturday that the real choice might be made – as in the past – only after prolonged horse-trading between national governments.

Schroeder says his Putin meeting helped free OSCE hostages

BERLIN (Reuters) – Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said on Sunday his controversial meeting with Vladimir Putin helped win the release of European military observers held in eastern Ukraine days later and he urged the West to stop focusing on sanctions on Russia.

Criticized for media pictures that showed him warmly embracing the Russian president at an April 28 meeting in St. Petersburg, Schroeder said he appealed to Putin to do what he could to free the seven Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe observers. They were released on May 3.

German government distances itself from Schroeder after his Putin meeting

BERLIN (Reuters) – The German government and media distanced themselves from ex Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder on Tuesday after pictures depicting him in an embrace with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg on Monday evening were published.

Schroeder’s office had no comment on the pictures, which according to the media reports were taken outside the Yusupov Palace where Schroeder was attending a belated celebration in honor of his 70th birthday on April 7.

German lawmakers see scope to cut tax ‘bracket creep’ around 2016

BERLIN, April 28 (Reuters) – Germany, flush with surging tax
revenues and strong economic growth, could lower income taxes in
2016 by eliminating “bracket creep”, according to a growing
number of voices in Angela Merkel’s right-left coalition.

Lawmakers from the chancellor’s Christian Democrats and the
centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) said there should be scope
for doing away with a tax code rule that income tax brackets are
not adjusted for inflation.

Merkel tells Putin Russia has not done enough to ease Ukraine crisis

BERLIN (Reuters) – Germany’s Angela Merkel said on Friday that she had told Russian President Vladimir Putin by telephone that Moscow had not done enough to urge separatists in Ukraine to disarm, and that further sanctions against Russia must be contemplated.

The European Union and Group of Seven (G7) nations would consider sanctions “within the framework of the second stage of sanctions” she said at a news conference in Berlin with Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk, referring to a three-stage scheme.
